Can I change the OS on a QNAP? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ganymedian_Craters · 2023-11-21 07:51 I’m quite new to this, so apologies if this is a stupid question. I recently got a QNAP TS-459 Pro+ secondhand, and it’s no longer supported softwarewise by QNAP. That makes it incompatible with a lot of modern software. Is there any way to either forcibly update the OS or change it out entirely? I’d love to actually be able to control the machine I own ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nik_h_75 · 2023-11-21 08:03 Not that I know of. NAS boxes are nice as AIO solutions and NAS boxes are annoying, as they are proprietary AIO solutions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hannsr · 2023-11-21 08:25 A lot of older qnap boxes can be booted from USB to load another OS. You can't really install it though, so it's a bit janky. But running truenas for example should work, there are tutorials or there in how to USB boot qnap. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-21 08:46 /r/QNAP ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ovidiufg · 2023-11-21 09:18 Maybe Unraid. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ganymedian_Craters · 2023-11-21 09:36 Thank you, I’ll look into that! I’ll happily take some jankiness just for the learning experience ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cemo1304 · 2023-11-21 11:22 I have a QNAP-TS453D and tried TrueNAS and Unraid on it from USB, both work fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ganymedian_Craters · 2023-11-21 11:55 Oooh thank you! That seems to be the way forward ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pigers1986 · 2023-11-21 12:01 unplug it's internal DOM (disk on memory - look it up) then boot installation from USB stick of desired OS - you might have problem with fan control (old docus: https://www.cyrius.com/debian/kirkwood/qnap/ts-41x/tips/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CatoDomine · 2023-11-21 12:21 s/memory/module/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- substitute-bot · 2023-11-21 12:21 unplug it's internal DOM (disk on **module** - look it up) then boot installation from USB stick of desired OS - you might have problem with fan control (old docus: https://www.cyrius.com/debian/kirkwood/qnap/ts-41x/tips/) ^^This ^^was ^^posted ^^by ^^a ^^bot. ^^[Source](https://github.com/anirbanmu/substitute-bot-go) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hannsr · 2023-11-21 12:22 Rather have some jank than throwing good hardware away. If one can keep it alive with a bit of fiddling, then why not. Also it should be no problem, because truenas for example doesn't really write to it's boot drive. So even a regular USB drive should be fine for quite some time. My truenas boxes run off of the cheapest SSDs I could find. 128GB for just 7 bucks, new. And the oldest system is now up for 2 years.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pigers1986 · 2023-11-21 12:41 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive#DOM like this one
