Vaultwarden has worked greatly for me but today I found it does not have a feature to auto fill for the other applications. Any alternatives? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sudden_Cheetah7530 · 2023-11-21 06:23 I have been so satisfied with the features so far. But I thought it would be better if I run vaultwarden on os level to autofill other applications. And I found [5-year-old thread](https://community.bitwarden.com/t/auto-type-autofill-for- logging-into-other-desktop-apps/1580) for this feature, so I lost hope for that. So I'm thinking of moving to the alternative. Anything works like vaultwarden plus this feature would be nice. Any recommendations? Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spuxilet · 2023-11-21 07:00 What are you talking about? I use autofill on laptop and on phone too and it works great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sudden_Cheetah7530 · 2023-11-21 07:04 I am running Linux but couldn't find the related options. Could you tell me how did you do that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-21 07:25 What exactly do you mean? For auto-fill you should install the browser extension. Is your goal to use auto-fill outside of a browser, in standard desktop applications?! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Porculius · 2023-11-21 07:26 If you installed the browser extension it's literally the first setting on top. You could leave it disabled and enable per entry, or enable globally and disable per entry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sudden_Cheetah7530 · 2023-11-21 07:30 Sorry for broken link, I fixed it. I mean autofill works great on browser extension but what I want is autofill on OS level so I can use that on other applications. Many people are saying Keypass working like this but I have never tried that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sudden_Cheetah7530 · 2023-11-21 07:31 Yep it works great on browser extension, I really like it! But I am wanting it to work on OS level. That's it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Porculius · 2023-11-21 07:36 I can't find the use case on desktop, but there are versions for it, even Linux in appimage format but never tested it. The Android app works nice and has autofill. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spuxilet · 2023-11-21 07:51 Oh i understand now. On android it does work on os level it suggests me to autofill from vaultwarden. On linux to be honest i can't think of situation when i needed it. But it's pretty easy to copy password from it and you can configure it so that it clears clipboard in for example 10 seconds. This is how i have it configured. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dumbasPL · 2023-11-21 11:21 Autofill on the host level only works if the OS and apps support it. I don't think there is a password auto-fill protocol for Linux. Autofill on OS level exists on Android (and maybe IOS? idk, don't use that trash) but I haven't seen it anywhere on a desktop. The best I've seen is automatic focus change and keyboard emulation to type the password. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dumbasPL · 2023-11-21 11:21 Autofill on the host level only works if the OS and apps support it. That was over a decade ago though. While not necessary, I agree it would be nice to hit a hotkey and autofill in the OS. 1pass has a feature where you can hit a hotkey and it brings up a small app window that I can can autofill anywhere. But you still need to do a search. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- leaflock7 · 2023-11-21 15:06 Keepass that it is mentioned was like auto-type not what browser extension does. This could inherently create some security issues I guess, so maybe this is why it is not there. Unless the app can support it, which means that it would be easier to make it work for windows, Mac and then linux, or if the app is electron based maybe. Just thinking out loud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bushwald · 2023-11-22 00:17 There is a bitwarden CLI if that's helpful. Not sure about Linux desktop apps.
