How I Safeguard Essential Data in My Homelab with Off-site Backup on Cloud reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash · 2023-11-21 03:25 Cross posting here as well, since the idea of automated backups sparked in my mind from the discussions with the people from this community. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- s3r3ng · 2023-11-22 20:13 The automation is nice but it didn't say anything about encryption of the data at rest on the cloud. It is not at all clear Google does this with full zero access by them. Some of the object stores such as S3 do apply encryption when you add something to them and they can be set to use your own encryption including on a per item basis. It isn't do hard to automate sending stuff to S3 and (equivalents on Digital Ocean and Linode) with a simple python script. If your cloud service is questionable on the data being encrypted at rest then encrypted the updates before sending them as part of the overall automation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash · 2023-12-31 04:55 Agreed, even I started thinking about the same and decided to modify my backup scripts to encrypt the files using gpg and push the encrypted files to cloud, this is easy sometimes and tricky to do in some scenarios so I don't have a full proof DIY solution for it yet. Pretty sure there would be some existing solutions and I would give it a try and update/create new guide based on the new experience soon.
