Starting selfhost noob looking for advice reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IDontHaveFriendz · 2023-11-20 22:36 Okay so i am a traditional broke student who wants to play some minecraft/valheim with my friends but we are done with renting servers and wanted to start making our own for this. So i scouted some minimum specs for an mc server and am looking at using an HP EliteDesk 800 G1 SFF For this because it is cheap at 68 euros and is slightly upgradable as the motherboard does have PCIe slots. It has: Intel Core i3-4130 @ 3,40Ghz (4th gen) 8gb ram (unknown speeds) 256gb ssd Ethernet connection (fine as it will be sitting next to my router Would this be a decent budget purchase? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IDontHaveFriendz · 2023-11-20 22:44 I posted this before going to bed because I just found this sub while on my healthy presleep reddit scroll. So my apologies for the undoubtably late replies and a big thanks in advance for anyone who bothered to read it this badly structured wall of text. Goodnight everyone ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-20 22:55 RAM (memory): At least 2 GB RAM for 1-2 players, 5 GB RAM for 3-6 and 8 GB RAM for more than 6 players. Keep in mind with Mods its going to take WAY more and you will still need ram for the OS. + Single Core performance is critical. Valheim: Recommended Specs: Hexa-Core Processor (6 Cores) @3.4 ghz or higher 6gb RAM I think you might be able to run either valheim or minecraft but not at the same time. I would defenetly search for a better server with a better cpu/ more ram ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ExaminationSerious67 · 2023-11-21 03:33 Depending on what mods you are running and if the system has any expansion options for RAM. If it doesn't, I would say it is a bit on the expensive side, but it will probably work, just maybe a bit slow on startup and world gen. If it has RAM expansion, get at least 16gb and it should work for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IDontHaveFriendz · 2023-11-21 07:33 I believe it has extra ram slots ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IDontHaveFriendz · 2023-11-21 07:34 Ah okay thanks for specifically saying single core performance. I will keep that in mind
