Transferring files but with a catch reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The_Prof_ · 2023-11-20 22:13 Hello. I am looking for a way to transfer files between my work laptop (Windows 11) and my home computer (Windows 10) and/or my home server (Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS). Many times I have a file on my laptop I'll need to work on using my home computer or server. The catch is that my work laptop is locked down HARD. Can't install anything at all. Can't activate any network discovery or sharing. Can't access remote shares not already approved. Can't change any settings which are significant in any way, and I.T. will provide no exceptions. I can't even get approval to install the driver for my home printer so I can print work documents on my home printer. I partly empathize with why they do it of course, but it still is irritating. :) I don't need to transfer files through the Internet - only through my local LAN at home. Emailing them to myself, or uploading to the cloud to then download them from the cloud one foot over is slow and annoying. So I'm wondering if there are any other options? Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iamofnohelp · 2023-11-20 22:18 Set up a web server that allows file uploads and downloads? From work pc visit the lan site. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AmINotAlpharius · 2023-11-20 22:22 Install FileBrowser somewhere and copy files via browser on laptop (I hope it's not locked down). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WalterWhite_2000 · 2023-11-20 22:30 Does your work laptop have USB rights? A flashdrive would be a very simple solution. Alternatively, [pairdrop.net](https://pairdrop.net) allows you to share files with other devices on the same network. There is a docker image in case you want to host it yourself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TearDrainer · 2023-11-20 22:48 \+1 for pairdrop As alternative: croc ( [https://github.com/schollz/croc](https://github.com/schollz/croc) ) Not as convenient but also works remote across the interwebs and for huge files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SoFrakinHappy · 2023-11-21 00:12 I'd imagine they might get an alert visiting a local address if they're locked down that hard. Copying data is often an immediate termination type of deal, even if you're not doing anything bad. The liability of losing control of their data is way way way more expensive than you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ScyperRim · 2023-11-21 01:09 Resilio sync ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The_Prof_ · 2023-11-21 03:54 I do appreciate this would work but just seemed like a lot of effort if I want to move a few documents once a week from one machine to another. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iamofnohelp · 2023-11-21 03:55 https://www.rejetto.com/hfs/ Not really ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The_Prof_ · 2023-11-21 03:55 As I was researching this problem I came across [snapdrop.net](https://snapdrop.net) which seems to be the same thing as [pairdrop.net](https://pairdrop.net) and seems to do exactly what is needed. I just need to read more into security and risks, and I'm not sure what is the difference between snapdrop and pairdrop? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The_Prof_ · 2023-11-21 03:56 I should clarify - the level of security is to prevent malware from getting back to the company network, rather than preventing our data from getting out. What we deal with isn't sensitive at all in that regards, but they have had several issues with viruses, etc. infiltrating into the network through people doing silly things on their laptops. We have no restrictions with working on documents on personal computers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The_Prof_ · 2023-11-21 03:57 >FileBrowser I will take a look at this option - thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The_Prof_ · 2023-11-21 03:59 Thanks - Pairdrop (and what seems to be the same program [snapdrop.net](https://snapdrop.net) ) is looking like a winner. Croc looks interesting for sure! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The_Prof_ · 2023-11-21 04:00 Looks cool - I believe this application is for synchronizing and I'm more looking for transferring from one to the other and then transferring back but I'll read more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The_Prof_ · 2023-11-21 04:14 Interesting! I'll check that out - looks like your username isn't true this time! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scara-manga · 2023-11-21 05:09 I'll second croc. Also maybe look at https://localsend.org/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- magtorix · 2023-11-21 14:02 I can tell your from a IT point of view, what you are trying to do is seen as “people doing silly things in their laptops” I would follow IT guidelines, if you need to be able to work on files at home they will be able to provide you with a solution that works for them and you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WalterWhite_2000 · 2023-11-21 19:19 Pairdrop is a fork of (=based on) Snapdrop. I switched from Snapdrop after their own website suffered a few outages. Pairdrop is supposed to be better and so far hasn’t let me down. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The_Prof_ · 2023-11-21 19:47 Thanks for this link! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The_Prof_ · 2023-11-21 20:39 So I looked into this and [localsend.org](https://localsend.org) is exactly what I need! Open-source, works on Linux and Windows, and can be used offline. Snapdrop and pairdrop were a close second but I preferred something I installed and hosted locally only. Thanks so much! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DearBrotherJon · 2023-11-22 00:33 Snap drop and pair drop are self hostable and can be local only. I host my own instance of pairdrop to do exactly what you’re asking for.
