Issue with Windows Update Auto Restart reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cevap · 2023-11-20 20:38 Self hosting an Ark Survival game server for my friends and I. Have it running through a windows VM on Proxmox. What is the best way to go around the “Windows Update auto restarting the server” deal? I set up a batch file to run server on start up in case, my other issue is I have the Windows login page and would like to skip right to the desktop instead to auto launch server. Appreciate any advice thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-20 20:40 Dont use a desktop Windows version for hosting servers. Disable Windows Updates, plenty of guides and tools exist for that. Automatic user login is also something you can Google within seconds. Try /r/Windows10 for example. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cevap · 2023-11-20 20:44 Yea I’ll take a look thanks for the advice. Windows was my last resort, not too familiar with Windows Server and initially started this with Linux. Then found out Ark SA hasn’t released Linux binary for it yet, so then resorted to Docker. Which worked but then ran into other issues. In any case I’ll take a look thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-20 21:10 Windows Server is Windows. Just install the Server Version. Windows for hosting is dogshit. Windows Server for hosting is still ugly but ok. For gameservers i wouldnt think you need to Check your Updates. But if you run critical shit on Windows you need to setup a WSUS. Windows Updates can fuck your Server + Clients pretty bad. ( usually Clients a few times a year and Server max 1 time a year) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Malossi167 · 2023-11-20 21:26 >Disable Windows Updates, plenty of guides and tools exist for that. Tried that a few times but in my experience it gets "fixed" after a few months and updates so I just gave up. I hardly use Windows for 24/7 machines anymore so not really worth fixing for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- root42_ · 2023-11-20 21:42 >Windows Updates can fuck your Server + Clients pretty bad. ( usually Clients a few times a year and Server max 1 time a year) This is bad advice. Maybe true back in the days of Windows XP/Windows 7. With Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019 and newer, you should be installing security patches monthly. I do recommend snapshots before any updates. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-20 21:46 What the fuck? Iam not talking about installing the Updates lol. Iam talking about how often Microsoft throws out Updates that fuck your production. NEVER leave any System unupdated. And put the security patches as fast as possible in there. Aswell as the maleware definitions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jagannooni · 2023-11-20 21:51 Go into windows updates settings you can pause them. Just schedule a maintenance window to update the server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ursa_Solaris · 2023-11-20 21:54 You're using Windows *and* playing ARK. My advice is to not do either of these things, as self-harm is never the answer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lachlan-00 · 2023-11-21 10:26 You set a wsus server which doesn't exist in group policy. At least that's how I used to do it.
