DAS question reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Training-Bison-874 · 2023-11-20 20:13 I am thinking of building a home media server, mostly for plex use. I have an older HP laptop with a GPU and 8GB RAM. Would I be able to use something like [this](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Y4F5SCK/ref=sspa_dk _detail_1?pd_rd_i=B07Y4F5SCK&pd_rd_w=dgdqM&content-id=amzn1.sym.0d1092 dc-81bb-493f-8769-d5c802257e94&pf_rd_p=0d1092dc-81bb-493f-8769- d5c802257e94&pf_rd_r=W96P2NG4EAJVJJCHK0YE&pd_rd_wg=EEdap&pd_rd_r=986b2 b96-7fa3-4a91-9966- e51c5248d029&s=electronics&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWwy&th=1) as my storage device and something like Unraid on my laptop as a software raid? I have been hearing that using USB arrays is not recommended for Unraid or with similar applications in general. Or Am I better off going with something like [this](https://www.amazon.com/Synology-2-Bay-NAS-DS223- Diskless/dp/B0BY7LGMNP/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1SR5AY7DOMOQJ&keywords=synology %2Bnas&qid=1700409078&sprefix=synology%2Bnas%2Caps%2C145&sr=8- 3&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.17d9e15d-4e43-4581-b373-0e5c1a776d5d&th=1)? I am OK with the price with both options, but mostly want stability, ease of use and data security. Remote plex access occasionaly, but mostly just for myself in my home ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-20 20:44 This sub is about selfhosting **software services**, not about any hardware purchase or upgrade advice. This has been running rock solid for years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- a_40oz_of_Mickeys · 2023-11-21 07:44 Not sure about Unraid, but OMV will not create an array using drives attached by USB. If you really want to go this route, you need a DAS with it's own raid controller. I used this along with my NUC: [https://www.terra-master.com/us/products/homesoho- das/d2-310.html](https://www.terra-master.com/us/products/homesoho- das/d2-310.html) That being said, It was less than a year before I wanted to expand my storage and ended up building a box with room for 12 SATA HDD and a little intel 13400. If you have the money, I would skip the DAS and just build yourself a little server. If you don't have the cash or don't plan on filling those drives with a bunch of media files, just make sure your DAS has it's own raid controller. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-22 06:32 ## Post Removed Hey, Training-Bison-874!
