Is anyone here running a public hosting server? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-11-20 16:57 I am just wondering, how many of you also have your own public hosting server (or servers) that you use to sell web-hosting and mail hosting etc? If so, which hosting panel are you using? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jason_a69 · 2023-11-20 17:01 I am self hosting Nextcloud ... so I don't actually next a panel for that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-11-20 17:03 I also host nextcloud for myself and my business. But I am specifically wondering who is favouring which panel if they are selling shared hosting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jason_a69 · 2023-11-20 17:04 I will watch the replies with interest...I would like to do more with my server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-20 17:08 You dont. At least not for money. You would need WAN Failover / HA Servers / Security Audits / Grid, Generator Failover. I have all that and still have a hard time to stay above 98.5% uptime. Trust me for normal people with just a Server in the basement it just isnt worth it. Leaking Continental Customer Data => high fines / prison Service not responsive => Paying for Damages / Fines ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-11-20 17:12 Honestly, I would never host a server with services that I sell in my basement. It works out a lot cheaper to use a datacenter or at least a VPS provider. Plus you then have redundant upstreams and power and all the physical security that comes with it. I have my ISPConfig server sitting in a datacenter here in South Africa. Getting in is harder than getting into a military base. I am wanting to know, from the selfhosting community, who is also selling shared hosting as a means of income, and what their choice of panel is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- roman5588 · 2023-11-20 17:19 Run a web hosting company. Primarily sell cPanel hosting but transitioning to Enhance. Running the servers is the cheap bit! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-20 17:22 I told you i did. Keyhelp hosting for webspaces. And most people want proxmox for their baremetals. And getting in is harder than into a Military base is just not true. Had a Company that i supported with Hardware etc that had 6 Security Audits from external Auditors. And still their whole System was hacked, the Data Sold and encrypted on their Systems. I still wouldnt recommend it for cash. I did it as a project for Fun / Experience. But if you look into the consequenzes if you fuck something up its not worth it. If you really want to earn cash with that, offer System Setups / System Hardening to people that have no idea how this stuff works. And PS: completly forgett about mailhosting. No hosting provider has ips that do not end up in a subnet Blacklist for spam. And i doubt that you make Profits if you buy a whole subnet of ip addresses ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tyqijnvy8 · 2023-11-20 17:32 I’ve been using Plesk for years for hosting and it’s a solid product. Using AWS for production and self host for development. Licenses have proven to be worth the cost for my uses. Email hosting on the production server with Plesk as the cplanel with Warden licenses. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnApexBread · 2023-11-20 18:15 I don't even let my friends have unrestricted access to my server because I don't want the liability that could come with one of them searching for/downloading illegal content. Sure I would technically fall under safe harbor laws but I don't want to spend the money on court/lawyer fees to prove that I'm not that one downloading shit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-11-20 18:19 >And getting in is harder than into a Military base is just not true. Teraco in South Africa is... shit, when I did Radio installations for Paramount (they make military vehicles), different bases around the world took less than a week to give me security clearance. Teraco was more fire hoops than the depths of dante's inferno. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-11-20 18:21 Webhosting and Mail hosting is my primary income... so yeah, I earn an income. I didn't have to buy a wole block of IPs, and I use 3rd party services to make getting IPs off black lists, plus, I have strict policies in place for the SMTP, so I don't have issues with people thinking they can relay spam through my server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-11-20 18:23 You missed the train here... how does selling hosting for websites and email come into friends downloading illegal content? If this was how it worked, then we would see way less hosting companies and way less websites. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-20 18:26 I mean you can install a proxy onto Webservers, and then use their ip to do shit. You cant pretty much controll it. And if you can control it, then its a dataprivacy nightmare ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-20 18:27 How would you restrict spam when you cant look into the Emails they are sending? If you can look into the Emails, its just a dataprivacy nightmare. And 3rd Party Services are nice, but if they stop the Service you are fucked. ++ Nobody trusts someone that forwards Emails through different relays and external services ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnApexBread · 2023-11-20 18:33 >You missed the train here.. I think you missed my point. If I don't let my friends use my VPS I'm definitely not selling it to strangers. >If this was how it worked, then we would see way less hosting companies and way less websites. Companies have more money to handle legal challenges than I do selling stuff out of my basement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-11-20 18:37 1. Set SMTP to only relay messages that the mailbox exists on your server, other wise drop it in a blackhole of nothingness. 2. For mail going to other domains, user must authenticate and use encryption. 3. Limit the number of deliveries per hour based on originating up address. Repeat offenders get blocked for a predefined length of time. If a client is affected they will call you and you can establish if they are abusing your server, in which case I do my favourite thing and fire them as a client, or if they have been infected by malware in which case I refer them to an IT support company or charge them a nice pocket or coin to fix it remotely using a remote desktop tool or my choosing. 4. DKIM and SPF are your friends, learn how to configure them correctly. 5. DNSSec is also a must have. These are just 5 steps. I have more, such as fail2ban etc I haven't had a blacklist issue in a few years now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-11-20 18:38 Nobody in their right mind runs a business grade server in their basement... That's why God invented Data centers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-11-20 18:40 I give up. I don't know how else to say explain how SMTP works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GWBrooks · 2023-11-20 18:42 I get it: You don't think this is a good idea. But the commenter you're responding to has an actual business up and running -- maybe give a nod to people having different priorities and risk tolerances. /u/thisiszeev -- congrats on your success. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GWBrooks · 2023-11-20 18:49 When I resold services, I used Plesk -- good account/customer security, looked professional, and the support was, whike not perfect, certainly better than a purely open-source product. Everyone wants to what-if about email, but it was never a big problem for me, even with bad actors. Accounts were rate limited, and repeat offenders to the terms of service were kicked off the platform. I spread out and lessened my vulnerability by sending emails to a smart host that, in turn, spread the mail load across multiple Postfix servers, each with a different IP address from a different block. If a server got blacklisted and that couldn't quickly be remedied? It was just removed from the pool, and a new one was added. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-11-20 18:55 I have had to deal with too many pot plant IQ comments on this post, I am out of this subreddit. I can't converse with narrow minded stupidity and people who don't know how things actually work. My time is way to valuable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-20 18:59 I know how SMTP works lol. I host a mailserver for several companys..... Its not about the stupid Emails per hour/minute/second. That doesnt matter. The companys send about 12000 Emails on the last day of the month from 1 mailserver.... Its about the content of the Emails. A few Emails and your on Spam... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-20 19:00 Yeah dont need to explain it to me. Since all of my mailservers have the best rating they could have. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-20 19:01 I host an emailserver for 12 Companys. I do hosting for them aswell. I got myself a good running Business aswell + i know for a fact that if someone is depended on 3. Party Services its just not a good Business. Change my mind... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-20 19:03 Your time is too valuble and you still ask reddit in the selfhosted thread. Sure buddy.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnApexBread · 2023-11-20 19:14 >Nobody in their right mind runs a business grade server in their basement... That's why God invented Data centers. Maybe I;m just really confused here. Your original question was how many people rent their home server out to other people to make some extra money. I answered that saying I wouldn't let my friends use it for free, I'm def not renting it out to people. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-11-20 19:34 I wanted to know, those who run public server for hosting websites and emails, what panels do they use. As in cPanel, Plesk, ISPConfig, etc. I was asking because I came up with a genius way to do offsite backups, that not only uses minimum resources, but also allows you to redeploy, clone, mirror, recover lost data, etc etc. Think GIT for web and mail servers. I have been developing it as a plugin for ISPConfig, and I wanted to see which other Panels I should tackle next.
