Choosing a Git self host server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rojeb-d · 2023-11-20 04:15 Hello fellow self hosters, I'm thinking about self hosting a git server, instead of using GitHub. I have closed my options down to Gitea and Soft-Serve I know that you can't really compare the two because they are very different one has a GUI and another is terminal based, but I really love the two and I can't choose between them, I'm kind of torn apart. I guess I need a third-person perspective from people that know their stuff. (Sorry if this is considered a low effort post, I'm new to this) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-20 04:50 Gitea. If you need more then Gitlab but also heavier on resources. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zoredache · 2023-11-20 04:51 Your code will be in git, so if you don't like it, you'll be able to switch later. Pick one and try it for a while? If you don't like it, clone your repo, then import it into the other? I kinda like having the web interface available, so I use gitea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Door_Vegetable · 2023-11-20 05:48 Gitea all the way they’re even supporting actions now which makes it good for a 100% self hosted solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Extension-Dare7375 · 2023-11-20 05:58 Gitea CI is currently in Beta ---------------------------------------------------------------------- root_switch · 2023-11-20 06:19 Yup and a container registry! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- generic-hamster · 2023-11-20 06:46 GitLab CE works for me quite well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProKn1fe · 2023-11-20 07:11 I use gitea for ~3 years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tatacom · 2023-11-20 09:13 Forgejo is a gitea fork maintained by a non-profit, highly recommend ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mar_floof · 2023-11-20 12:43 Me too. Let me drop my stand alone container registry, the Jenkins server, and the jira server. It’s not lightweight, but what you get for that resource use cannot be understated ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spuddman · 2023-11-20 13:38 If you need something simple Gitea, if you want CI/CD pipelines, SAST testing, PM, Gitlab-CE. I use Gitlab-CE for work and personal now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jwink3101 · 2023-11-20 17:28 If your team is small (or just you), I've been super happy *not* using any kind of git host and just pushing to a bare repo via SSH. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Reasonable-Ladder300 · 2023-11-20 21:30 Both these options are the decision maker for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fratm · 2023-11-20 23:34 I've been using GOGS, mainly because it has such a small footprint. I made a video about it, not a great video, but.. well watch it if you want lol [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKNCCFgvaXA](https://www.you tube.com/watch?v=AKNCCFgvaXA) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UnseemlyCorgi · 2023-11-20 23:46 Gitlab ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rrrmmmrrrmmm · 2023-11-21 13:19 This. GitLab has amazing integrations and functions but you might want to follow [this](https://docs.gitlab.com/omnibus/settings/memory_constrai ned_envs.html) and [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/gitlab/comments/10m 0hxa/gitlab_container_image_without_extra_applications/?utm_source=sha re&utm_medium=web2x&context=3). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-21 13:29 Yes, i found your post about this yesterday and based on that came up with a compose for GitLab that has almost everything disabled by default, atleast from a quick test it seems to work fine :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sk1nT7 · 2023-11-21 22:15 Gitlab, Gitea, OneDev
