Trying to get started reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rio-Chevalier · 2023-11-19 20:24 So, I'm looking to set up a personal cloud and plex server on a synology nas, and this was the excuse I needed to upgrade my modem and router with it. I've got the modem but now I'm lost on which router to get. If anyone has any suggestions or even questions I should be asking, help would be appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Z8DSc8in9neCnK4Vr · 2023-11-19 20:46 Any interest in x86-64 based, OPNsense / PFsense? I could not go back to consumer grade, just too limiting. You basically need any old 64bit computer, unless you have multi- gigabit internet it can be quite old, and add in a 2 or 4 port nic, Preferably Intel. Open WRT is another option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-19 21:26 Try /r/HomeNetworking or similar. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DIYSRE · 2023-11-19 21:55 \+1 to OPNSense if this is an option. Our ISP installs their fibre to the premise. They have a box that handles that stuff. We just have to plug our routers WAN port into the modem, set WAN port to DHCP and we're ready to rock. OPNSense on an Optiplex with a PCIE NIC is sufficient for a small household. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- user01401 · 2023-11-19 23:54 +1 for OpenWrt. Using it for both router and AP's. SQM and being on Linux and pluses ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkextratoasty · 2023-11-20 04:11 Do you need to upgrade your router? Most of the time the bottleneck is the ISP limits on the Internet connection, not the modem or router. If you do want to replace your router, my vote is Opnsense. You can run it on pretty much any x86 machine with at least two Ethernet ports.
