Best network settings for media server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shanks_mafia · 2023-11-18 22:15 Hi, I just set up my jellyfin server(on a reverse proxy) and I noticed that sometimes it takes a min or buffers alot when I watch at 1080P. I run my server on dell OptiPlex 3020 with 16gb ram and a sdd(no graphics card). I also have a 1gb internet with 35 upload speed. eventually I want to add a few user on it, but I up just working out the kinks. Would you guys have any recommendation for network settings that I could modify to help have a faster buffering speed(or any videos on this)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ADB-UK · 2023-11-18 22:26 Check what is running - I'll guess it's transcoding the video and it's ffmpeg that's taking the time. Try using the Jellyfin clients or enabling hardware transcoding if the CPU supports it. Jellyfin have withdrawn from here and their user forum can be found at [https://forum.jellyfin.org/index.php](https://forum.jellyfin.org/inde x.php) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloudswithflaire · 2023-11-18 23:18 It would help to know what proxy you are using. (Speaking as a fellow Spectrum hostage… just because Spectrum calls the plan a ‘Gigabit plan’ doesn’t mean that either of us have 1gb internet lol - ignore if Spectrum isn’t your ISP) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-19 00:11 You are probably transcoding video sometimes. Use the Jellyfin forums. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shanks_mafia · 2023-11-19 13:17 oh nice thank you!, how do I check if my cpu support hardware transcoding? also ty for the website, had a hard time trying to figure out where to go since the reddit of jellyfin doesn't allow me to post. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shanks_mafia · 2023-11-19 13:19 I am using ngix proxy combines with cloud fare. and LOL Ik , I am using optimum(wish I had version but monopolies). I had a argument with recently because I had a router/modem that could do 1gb but was only getting 600mb download speed. now im getting 800mb and I'm ok with that as long as my upload speed is high. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ADB-UK · 2023-11-19 15:14 [https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/administration/hardware-acceleratio n/](https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/administration/hardware- acceleration/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloudswithflaire · 2023-11-19 18:18 Wait you think that 35mbps upload is high? No sir, you couldn’t be more wrong. I would literally give up half of my download speed just to have an upload speed that was over 100mbps at home. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shanks_mafia · 2023-11-19 20:16 😭Man I wish I could get more its just optimum price plans suck ass ands its confusing, there site says 940mb download and upload but when I call the reps they telll me oh u only get up to 35 upload with the 1gb plan ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloudswithflaire · 2023-11-19 23:53 One of my favorite things ever, every customer service/sales person that I’ve ever spoken on the phone with uses __megabyte__ when are obviously talking about megabits…. have had more than a few months shaved off my bill when supervisors heard the words “false advertising” lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shanks_mafia · 2023-11-21 13:35 its so annoying dealing with optimum. I had one telling me I wouldn't get close to 1gb download because I was using a router and modem separate and not connecting directly to my modem when my router supports 1gb. Ik I wasn't crazy so I hung up on them. next week i'm getting around 960mbps download with the same set up -\_-. lol maybe I should just tell them false advertising too so I get more upload speed. i'm supposed to be getting "Up to" 250mb upload speed
