Looking for advice upgrading my existing home media server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pleaseclap4 · 2023-11-18 17:07 Hi! I'm trying to change some things around as I'm not happy with my current setup. To preface, this machine stores and serves media to all the clients in the house, as well as to our neighbor via reverse proxy and FQDN. I'd love some guidance and advice from you all. ***My current setup:*** * X570 Motherboard w/ Ryzen 5950x CPU * 32GB DDR4 * 6x 3.5" HDD connected via HBA PCI card * UNRAID * Runs Jellyfin, the RR's, the basic home media server stack in other words ***Issues to solve:*** * I dislike UNRAID * Not impressed with VM support * Don't care for the UI * Just too used to regular Linux and would rather use that * Transcoding Ability * the 5950x does not have iGpu * I've mucked around with Tdarr a bit, but don't really understand it ***Hardware available/on-hand:*** * Gaming tower I'm currently using for gaming * 10700k processor * Can resolve the transcoding issue * Spare PC * z690 board with 12900k Being a textbook overthinker, I'm stuck here. So, what is immediately apparent to me is that my media server would be much better off on the 10700k machine, as it has iGpu, while the current server with 5950x would be much better as a gaming PC. So there is the thought to swap out some stuff, ending up with my gaming PC having the 5950x and graphics card, and my server having now the 10700k. Additionally, instead of UNRaid, I think I'd rather go with either Proxmox or ESXi. Then from there, spin up a Linux VM for my Jellyfin/RR's stack, and spin up another VM with TrueNAS Core. I've also got a nice 12900k machine I use at my business, but it's wildly overkill for what it's used for, so that could play a part here too. What would you do, given the above information?
