Is it possible to use the same OS image across VPS providers? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yukiiiiii2008 · 2023-11-18 09:56 I bought several VPSes across different VPS providers. Although I chose Ubuntu 20.04 on all providers, I found they use different Linux kernels. There might be other differences as well. In order to keep my running environment stable, I want to use the same OS image in all VPSes. But I think it's impossible, it seems, that every vendor has some modification on internet options at least. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-18 10:14 Rent dedicated servers instead if you want full control. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WiseCookie69 · 2023-11-18 10:51 If they're VMs, just install the kernel you want - keeping them updated is your responsibility anyways. If they're containers (Virtuozzo), you're not gonna change the kernel anyways. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-18 11:50 You can export VM's and move them from provider to provider like that. How about switching everything to containers instead so the host OS does not matter? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- haqk · 2023-11-18 12:16 It shouldn't be a problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pigers1986 · 2023-11-18 14:55 if you are able to run ISO provided by YOU, than YES ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zoredache · 2023-11-18 19:30 Some VPS will manage your kernel for you and use a 'optimized' kernel. You can often change it to what you want. But sometimes you have to go into the control panel to change it.
