Looking for "client" setup to use for parents computer remote access via Gaucamole reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-17 21:36 I've setup Guacamole to access my home LAN and it works amazing. But, one feature of TV I'm trying to figure out is how I can install something on my parents computer (outside my LAN) that will allow me to connect without having to rely on port forwarding on remote end (what if my mom is travelling for example). I considered setting up a VPN, but I don't feel the client should have constant access to my entire LAN at home. Looking for suggestions how I could setup some sort of client setup on remote computer that works without port forwarding on remote computer. It would need to "call home" I suppose to update its remote IP and be able to connect regardless of remote firewalls, suggestions appreciated! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meijad · 2023-11-17 21:57 You could create a tunnel/vpn that can be turned on or off as needed. I've used wireguard and tailscale in this situation. I eventually just installed rustdesk and hosted a server to support my parents. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-17 22:14 I actually just posted on Rustdesk as thats my next step, probably simpler. Does Rustdesk have WebUI? I also love that guacamole doesn't require connecting client to have anything installed. Any way to make Guacamole connect via RustDesk? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-17 22:16 https://www.reddit.com/r/rustdesk/comments/17xp7dl/rustdesk\_does\_it\ _require\_port\_forwarding\_for/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meijad · 2023-11-17 23:05 To my knowledge it's a desktop application. You could remote to a VM or PC and use the application, probably a little overboard. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-11-18 01:26 Maybe look at MeshCentral it is like TeamViewer just selfhosted and better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-18 20:04 I tried MeshCentral, I couldn't get it to work and didn't like the things it tried to "automate" for me, made it hard to debug. UI looked dated, but I hear grate things. For now, I went w/ RustDesk. Sometimes, when a program is soo hard to configure, I have to use it lol, while RustDesk was hard, I at least was able to get it working. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-11-18 20:08 What do you mean with "automate"? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-18 20:14 I did get the WebUI to work actually! Its the only "beta" version they released and then removed it for "Paid" version, but it works! What a pain to setup, but it will serve its purpose for parents. I like having 2x methods sometimes for RDP. For example, if my webserver config gets boinked, I can't use Guacamole to fix, but I think RustDesk will still work via client. I'm did a write up install here [https://www.reddit.com/r/rustdesk/com ments/17yevvf/rustdesk\_self\_hosted\_setup\_guide/](https://www.reddi t.com/r/rustdesk/comments/17yevvf/rustdesk_self_hosted_setup_guide/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-18 20:23 Like how it wants to have you download pre-built executables with the configs in them. I get the idea, but I needed to be able to test configs basically to see where issue was and couldn't figure it out, was trying to be too "helpful". That should be optional/last step, but able to manually configure options in clients and I couldn't. Basically, I setup server/client and the server never discovered the client and I couldn't figure out why. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-11-18 21:11 You can set client option for every client in the server config file or for a single client edit the .msh file and clients not connecting is propably a problem with your reverse proxy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-20 20:22 Yeah I'm going to dig in again as Rustdesk doesn't appear to support port 80/443. I think MeshCentral will end up being the goto solution or Guacamole w/ some sort of VPN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bagaudin · 2023-11-20 20:58 Have you tried our Acronis Cyber Protect Connect yet? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-20 22:17 I have not, I looked at it quickly, looks to be some sort of software based firewall/security app? Does this relate to OP somehow? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bagaudin · 2023-11-20 22:22 > install something on my parents computer (outside my LAN) that will allow me to connect without having to rely on port forwarding on remote end (what if my mom is travelling for example). This a software that addressed the above. Disclosure (since I noticed I somehow don't have a flair here): I am r/Acronis mod and Acronis Community Manager. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-22 21:49 Well, I ended up w/ using wg-easy to setup a VPN between moms computer and guacamole server. I like this because I can control the VPN on my end easily via the WebUI. So when I want to RDP, I'll enable VPN then use Guac to RDP, but most of the time, no VPN. Also, I now have a VPN. Tried Rustdesk (so promising, so horrible), read on other options, tried MeshCentral again. Guacamole RDP over HTML is just the bomb as far as the actual user experience once setup. This way, by having VPN, I allow Guacamole to do what its good at and I allow VPN to do what it is good at and don't try and find software thats "all in one" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-22 21:51 >Acronis Cyber Protect Connect Can this be self hosted 100% without using remote servers/paid license? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-22 21:55 Honestly, after trying Rustdesk and reading some Github threads ("we won't support SSL because its too much work for our 8 servers...., we don't even use DNS because its too hard to etup") or ("We fixed wayland by messing w/ your local config files") along with the fact it can't be proxied over 443/80, I ended up using "wg-easy" for VPN (Wireguard) and am quite happy. Guacamole is just too good of a client, worth it for me to setup the backend connection to continue using Guac in the browser. Feels as close to native as I've ever gotten over RDP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-22 21:57 I tried again, just doesn't want to work for me. I have a million things I've setup/tested/used w/ LetsEncrypt using NGINX as proxy and I never have issues, don't know what I was doing wrong w/ Meshcentral, but that was part of the problem. It does look to be 100% what I want, but I really don't like the "documentation" either, seems like its "watch these videos" which I'm not into. I want technical documentation w/ `code` blocks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bagaudin · 2023-11-22 23:14 There is a free version meaning there are limits on how you use the software (biggest one is that free session is limited to 15 minutes) but no self-hosted version available. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeSoftwareServers · 2023-11-22 23:33 well.... probably not appropriate for r/selfhosted then TBH. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bagaudin · 2023-11-22 23:36 Yeah, that’s why I specifically quoted the part of your comment to highlight which exact scenario the software is addressing.
