Google Photos alternative with close to same search features ?

I use google photos. Both me and my wife upload all taken photos for
the same google account. That's awesome!. But Why google photos ?
Because it's reliable, cheap AND has great search filters, like for
people and places ( I can find a photo taken in a certain place).

What is the self hosted alternative for something close to that ?

Yes. I currently use Immich. It is very identical to Google. And works
great too. I have previously tried Photoprism, Piwigo, and
Librephotos. I was looking for the same features that you are. Found
them all in Immich.

Yea Immich is fantastic.

Just note that it is still in heavy development so make sure you are
backing up your photos somewhere. I've never had anything happen but
breaking changes do happen

it works fine with Tailscale! already uploading / downloading photos!
