Looking for simple set up DNS server suggestions reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Top_Outlandishness78 · 2023-11-16 14:15 I only want it do one thing, gives the locally configured IP address when it has the records. Any suggestions? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bka-informant · 2023-11-16 14:21 Technitium DNS Server is really very easy to manage and even has a very nice web UI and as a bonus even a DHCP server built in if you need one https://technitium.com/dns/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JayDubEwe · 2023-11-16 14:29 https://github.com/pi-hole/docker-pi-hole ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Viktor_654 · 2023-11-16 14:32 Duckdns.org Free, but long, domain name that you can point to your lan Avaiablename.duckdns.org. 192.168.1.100 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lumsti · 2023-11-16 14:48 I use a pi-hole to also filter common ad-domains and similar stuff. I would also suggest to not use google dns but Quad9. Quad9 is an independent DNS Company of Swiss (servers are worldwide) which also integrates Security features. Depending on which of their IPs you use, they already filtered malware and phishing DNS requests and they offer dnssec validation. And the biggest plus, they don't use your unencrypted DNS requests to monitor which websites you visit. Google uses this kind of stuff and not only in your favor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WitShortage · 2023-11-16 14:55 I use PiHole. I switch off DHCP on my firewall and use PiHole for that, which makes the DNS config a bit easier. I use CloudFlare as my next hop. There are loads of options for installing PiHole. Obviously you can install it on a Pi, which I did originally, but I've just moved it to a container image on Proxmox. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MisterBazz · 2023-11-16 15:31 \+1 for Technitium ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Big_Atomic · 2023-11-16 15:32 +1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dnt_pnc · 2023-11-16 16:39 Pi-hole or AdGuard ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EquivalentBrief6600 · 2023-11-16 17:53 Any dns server software should do this, dnsmasq is very light, even bind if you want to go full fat. I used pihole for awhile and it was neat. Then I bit the bullet and got an actual mini-pc router with a bunch of NICs on it and put OPNSense on it. I now use Unbound DNS on OPNSense and it has made my network a lot easier to manage & more stable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- purepersistence · 2023-11-16 19:00 OPNsense firewall unbound dns. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chandz05 · 2023-11-16 19:27 Is pi-hole DHCP reliable? I run pi-hole and have some manual local DNS entries and IP mappings, but DHCP is still run from my router. Dunno why I'm so afraid of making the switch ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ursa_Solaris · 2023-11-16 19:30 I run AdGuard+Unbound off my OPNSense box. AdGuard provides adblocking, but looks upstream to Unbound for local hostname resolution so that I can quickly browse to anything with `hostname.local.domain.tld`. AdGuard also supports DNS caching too, and it makes a noticeable improvement on the initial pageload. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrpink57 · 2023-11-16 19:40 If all you want to do is forward to google and redirect internally just use unbound or knot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WitShortage · 2023-11-16 20:23 Yes, I have about 35 devices at home, a mix of fully dynamic and mac reservations. I use AdguardHome for "general purpose", and CoreDNS for my lab projects. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _avee_ · 2023-11-16 22:46 AdGuard can also do local DNS. What is the advantage of using a separate service for it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ursa_Solaris · 2023-11-16 23:02 I would have to use AdGuard as the DHCP server to do that. I wanted to keep my DHCP inside OPNSense's scope and only use AdGuard for DNS. Keeps me flexible if I want to change later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _jmcglock_ · 2023-11-17 00:33 I love NextDNS: [https://jmcglock.substack.com/p/i-keep-going-back-to- nextdns](https://jmcglock.substack.com/p/i-keep-going-back-to-nextdns) I wrote an article about why. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ADB-UK · 2023-11-17 01:08 Try [https://github.com/gitbls/ndm](https://github.com/gitbls/ndm) It's command line driven but takes very little in the way of memory / processor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulEngineer-89 · 2023-11-17 04:25 Pihole will integrate with unbound. Pihole already caches as well. The advantages of unbound are debatable. Work arround was to set a static IP on the TV with specified DNS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unconscionable · 2023-11-18 10:52 >OPNSense ban list is WAY too aggressive. I believe you can use different lists, however I will say that I no longer use any sort of DNS adblocking because it broke some applications my wife needed for work. I imagine I could fiddle with the block lists and find ones that are less problematic, but I determined that it ultimately causes more problems than it solves for me.
