Nice, I'll be keeping an eye on this.

I've Considered doing something similar myself... The #1 feature
Route53, is its health monitoring.. The only opensource solution I'm
aware of with it, was PowerDNS, which is waaaayy to complex... then
there is Simple Failover, but its commercial:

One use-case that keeps cropping up, is for SMTP sending, most self-
hosted software allows the setting on an SMTP server... but if the
SMTP server itself is down, then you won't get alerts about the
alerts..
