What should I even self host? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sam_Cooper · 2023-11-16 07:20 stupid question I know but let me explain. I self host only because I love learning random things and this was just another thing that I convinced myself I needed to learn, not out of necessity. I am hosting an *arr media system right now but that is pretty much the only thing I actually need, I have unlimited google photos so I don't need Immich, I am happy with bitwarden so I don't need vaultwarden, don't need home assistant, nextcloud, bookstack etc so what I should I self host? throw any idea you have at me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- root_switch · 2023-11-16 07:30 Thank me later. https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted https://github.com/awesome-foss/awesome-sysadmin ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WaySad234 · 2023-11-16 07:34 Plex/sonarr/radarr ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tweek91330 · 2023-11-16 07:36 Self hosting is en mostly about keeping control of your data, paying capex instead of opex and having something to play/learn with. If you don't need any of those you probably don't wanna self host tbf. Lots of people here have quite a large media collection and storage costs can addup pretty quick in opex. I basically have 15TB of media in Jellyfin so just imagine the cost of that in public cloud. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-16 07:45 Gaming server? If you really love to learn then you can literally self host anything. You just don't love it that much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- killermouse0 · 2023-11-16 08:19 If you do this as a learning experiment, then I'd suggest you self host even those you don't need and see if you can get to a quality of service similar to those services you pay for. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- killermouse0 · 2023-11-16 08:19 If you do this as a learning experiment, then I'd suggest you self host even those you don't need and see if you can get to a quality of service similar to those services you pay for. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sam_Cooper · 2023-11-16 08:21 you ok there? lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sam_Cooper · 2023-11-16 08:25 thank you, that's what I have been doing so far, just trying random apps every day but yeah sometimes it gets me wondering if I can actually get something out of it apart from doing it for the sake of curiosity, that's all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- killermouse0 · 2023-11-16 08:28 Just like spaghetti. Toss all the experiments to the wall and keep those that stick. That way you'll be sure to gain value even outside of the sheer learning experience. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sam_Cooper · 2023-11-16 08:28 makes sense, thank you. Yeah I probably am never going to have a library that big and my other tech needs are fairly simple too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sudodoyou · 2023-11-16 08:34 You doing alright? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-16 08:36 Very much so, thanks for asking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kurucu83 · 2023-11-16 08:43 I like this. Running an application is easy. Automation, security, observability, etc. is the hard part. Learn about Ansible, Terraform, GitOps, backup solutions, logging, network security, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulEngineer-89 · 2023-11-16 11:04 How much are you paying for Google storage? I have terabytes of photos and video, not a teeny 15 GB. Google ended unlimited photos about 2-3 years ago. Where have you been? Bitwarden is annoying when they are down and as a personal account that’s one thing but it’s not free if you share a family group vault. May want to look seriously at Pihole. Lots of other things like nocodb, excalidraw, private VPN (Tailscale). Also I’m an engineer so I have thousands of documents. I convert the raw PDFs with the OCR/PDF utility then Sist2 can search them in like 2 seconds. No way to do it manually. Been collecting since 1989 and a lot of stuff doesn’t exist outside my files. There is NO equivalent. Plus when I run Google Photos on my phone, Google grabs my photos, location, and number and delivers it to every criminal spam/scam system in India. Within minutes I get spam calls. They can go fuck themselves. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulEngineer-89 · 2023-11-16 11:16 It doesn’t work very well if you don’t commit. I mean openspeed test for instance is zero effort but setting up Immich or setting up and tuning Pihole is not trivial. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulEngineer-89 · 2023-11-16 11:18 Most people have about 1-2 TB on average if you add it up of unique data. Google gives you 15 GB for free. See a problem? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulEngineer-89 · 2023-11-16 11:20 Do you back anything up? Do you have/use/understand VPN? Video is just video. You are still paying for streaming unless you are just pirating Usenet or torrents. And if that’s the case how many times do you watch the same video? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msanangelo · 2023-11-16 12:14 if you're not sure what to host then find a list and look for something interesting. such lists are linked here, in the side bar and on google with the right query. don't host for the sake of hosting, you'll never actually use it. I have docker apps that looked interesting, installed them, then never use them. I have a few apps that I use daily and that's it. never open services directly to the internet either, run them thru a proxy. your security and sanity will thank you. you shouldn't let the internet decide for you, that's a good way to get in trouble. lol we host because it's fun and saves us money vs some cloud service. plus, I like having the hardware on prem. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Innocent__Rain · 2023-11-16 12:19 I don't think self hosting is necessarily about what you need. it's more about having control over your own data and not having to rely on others. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SnooApples1743 · 2023-11-16 13:03 Well bro, I just learnt the basics of docker by setting up a bunch of containers and giving it a front end with Homarr, learnt about SSL's and reverse proxies with nginx, letsencrypt, and duckdns. The services/containers I'm running are: -FreshRSS -Syncthing -NextCloud -VSCode -Trillium -JellyFin -AdGuard -Qbitorrent This was quite the process but if the uni-style workflows are successfully implemented. It is very worth it. Even just to learn or suppliment your knowledge. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Accomplished-Lack721 · 2023-11-16 13:31 If you're happy with those services ... maybe you shouldn't? I self-host because I prefer to house my data locally when possible. It's easier for backups and I'm not subject to the whims and financial decisions made by a company about whether their service will remain available, what it will cost, what functions it will offer. The tradeoff is work on my part, but I enjoy tinkering and learning. In my case, I self-host a NextCloud instance for remote access to my docs, a Calibre Web server for eBooks (and to share those with a few trusted friends), a Vaultwarden instance because I'd prefer my vaults not be stored by a company whose servers are likely a major target for bad actors and that could change its TOS or offerings in the future. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trisanachandler · 2023-11-16 13:40 I remember thinking 40 GB was huge coming from around 7 GB for hard drive sizes. I'm still on the cheap end, but have 60-80 TB of raw storage. Really only use 16 TB and RAID + backups + ephemeral. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Micex · 2023-11-16 14:14 Yes you get a lot out of it. First you learn how to self host individual apps. Then you realise a lot of things are in a mess, random ports, directories and backup strategies leading to a very hard way to manage all your self hosted services. Then you decide to start from scratch with a plan, and this time you are in a better position than before. Rinse and repeat as you grow and learn more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DrunkOnKnight · 2023-11-16 14:27 Network wide Adblock, using pi hole or AdGuard home ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oz6024u · 2023-11-16 14:34 Well played root. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fire597 · 2023-11-16 14:49 It's been 7h already, can I thank you now ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rglullis · 2023-11-16 15:16 You can start by getting out of reddit and hosting your own Lemmy instance. :) **This response is from an [original comment on the Fediverse](https://selfhosted.forum/comment/14139) and bridged via [Fediverser](https://github.com/mushroomlabs/fediverser).** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eve-collins · 2023-11-16 17:02 What kind of documents are you collecting that don’t exist anymore? But that's where the fun begins :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- s3r3ng · 2023-11-16 20:16 Well, YMMV may vary and seems to from the above. But for me self- hosting, especially on home machines, is largely about privacy and reduced cost as well as learning. Google in particular will hover up all data possible and profile you to hell and back selling the results. I used to use Dropbox and a higher price plan to get their \[dubious\] encryption and so on until I realized I could meet all my needs and more data across multiple machines with a NAS or NFS among other solutions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- s3r3ng · 2023-11-16 20:17 Holy Shit and WOW! Thank you so much! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- root_switch · 2023-11-17 02:21 No problem, I thought there was an awesome list of awesome GitHub’s lists but can’t find it. There are multiple “awesome” lists, like awesome-docker, awesome-web-archiving and more! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulEngineer-89 · 2023-11-17 02:29 It’s not fun when say you screw up a Pihole setting or block more than you expect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulEngineer-89 · 2023-11-17 02:39 Well there are my personal files. And old project information. I also save old manuals that have a tendency to get trashed. Good luck finding much of anything on Brown Boveri products that are still in use or old GE or Westinghouse stuff. ABB put out there what they could find but it’s not much. Like the old very well documented prints for dragline excavators, essentially all controls built by GE until they exited the business in the 1990s. Also old American Foundry Society text books. And a lot of stuff I have from various pay services like law libraries and engineering libraries that I no longer have free access to. I collect this stuff and frequently end up referring back to it. And yes I know about sci-hub and Library Genesis. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eve-collins · 2023-11-17 07:41 Very nice, thanks for sharing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lighthawk16 · 2023-11-17 07:49 https://github.com/sindresorhus/awesome ---------------------------------------------------------------------- killermouse0 · 2023-11-17 17:48 Well I guess it depends? I enjoy troubleshooting as much as other people enjoy doing sudokus. I do agree that it's not for everyone though.
