Self-hosted Centralized Cloud? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElectroclassicM · 2023-11-15 19:04 What would be a good self-hosted solution for a centralized file cloud? Think of a Google Drive, but a centralized one; each user will be able to log to the central folder but depending on perms, will be able to perform different actions. I tried ownCloud and Nextcloud, but it looks like they're more oriented to replace the "traditional" (for lack of a better word) cloud providers. I'm looking to install it on an Unraid server, I've been looking for a solution like that for weeks, but my Google powers are no good for things I'm not able to describe in a few words lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flaming_m0e · 2023-11-15 19:20 Owncloud, and NextCloud, do exactly this... Also Seafile ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unofficialtech · 2023-11-15 19:30 Your request is a little unclear. You want to replace a cloud provider like OneDrive/Google Drive, but don't want a "traditional" setup? Those would be the traditional setups in my opinion. With addons, NextCloud can have collaborative document editing, email, calendar, etc... - can effectively become the hub that iCloud has for apple and Google products have for android, but detached from either. I believe you can also integrate your onedrive and google drive space into nextcloud to make it effectively a frontend. If you have more specific functions your looking for that may help someone guide you to a solution that better meets your needs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-11-15 20:18 You should try Nextcloud since it does exactly what you are saying you want to do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zeal514 · 2023-11-15 20:28 Uh... You described next cloud. Not sure what exactly you dislike about it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dcabines · 2023-11-15 21:40 Seafile has SeaDrive which mounts like an external drive and works just like other similar services like OneDrive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tech2but1 · 2023-11-15 21:50 Yep. OP asked about filesharing, which is what Seafile does. I don't know why people keep recommending Nextcloud for everything, it does filesharing but with loads of other stuff added on and overall is a lot less stable than the simple Seafile. Nextcloud seems to be the "when all you have is a hammer..." solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tech88Tron · 2023-11-16 00:06 Synology. Have to buy the hardware, but 1,000% the best Google Drive alternative and 100% self hosted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElectroclassicM · 2023-11-16 00:21 Yes and no. Sorry for the confusion, I know this is usual in conventional server shares, right? You connect to a local server and you share a folder. I need that, but with the added benefit of adding permission to certain users and them being able to access it within the premises on a web- based GUI. Kind of like what Google Drive does, kind of what a traditional file server does. Honest question, am I being too weird with my request? Haha ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElectroclassicM · 2023-11-16 00:22 Unfortunately, I already have a computer for that matter, and in my country, Synology is a little too much on the expensive side :( ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seanpmassey · 2023-11-16 01:01 That is literally what OwnCloud and NextCloud do, though. Each user gets a folder, but you can also set up centralized folders and give users different permissions on them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElectroclassicM · 2023-11-16 01:02 the first part is exactly what i don't want. only access to the centralized folders haha. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fernatic19 · 2023-11-16 01:05 Two ideas: First, you're describing exactly a traditional SFTP share with the same files being in a location but each user can have different permission levels. Also, samba shares does the same thing. Not sure if a modern web UI is a requirement for you though. Second, you could use nextcloud and just share the files, or use groups (or circles I can't remember what they call it). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TwoDogDad · 2023-11-16 01:11 Then don’t put files in your user directory. You have an admin that sets up the parent directory and then assign access to a group. Users join and are defaulted to the group that has access to admins directory. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElectroclassicM · 2023-11-16 02:40 That's exactly my problem, I don't know how to do it! Sorry, I'm a noob on this Self-hosted thing. Would you be able to point me to how to do it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TwoDogDad · 2023-11-16 17:13 You should start exploring, learning the setting, practice making users, click buttons and find out what happens. I think that's how a lot of learn here. There is also a nextcloud wiki somewhere that could be useful. Good luck!
