Supersonic 0.8.0 is out now with Jellyfin support! reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-11-15 17:08 Hi everyone! Just announcing that [Supersonic](https://github.com/dweymouth/supersonic) version 0.8.0 is out, now with support for Jellyfin servers! For Jellyfin users, or anyone else new to the app, Supersonic is a lightweight but full- featured cross platform desktop music player, featuring gapless playback, ReplayGain, a graphic equalizer, infinite scrolling grid views, and more! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DistantRefaktor · 2023-11-15 17:47 Question. Is there some template that all these type of projects of coping from? They all seem to be based off the same poor design choice I do not like. I keep seeing it over and over and make me think people are using a template and not actually doing much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-11-15 17:50 Not a template but I think people just use other apps' UIs as inspiration. I was inspired by Sonixd's UI but I wanted to make it a bit less cluttered, and I'm sure Sonixd was inspired in turn by Spotify (its successor Feishin is especially inspired by Spotify). Just curious, what design would you prefer? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ultrahkr · 2023-11-15 17:53 I like it! Nice interface Add a current playing playlist view, JF has it OOB. Please add a lightweight installer... And could you implement the "instant mix" feature from Jellyfin? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-11-15 17:55 Instant Mix is implemented but it's called "Artist Radio" and is accessed from an artist page. Terminology from Spotify ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ultrahkr · 2023-11-15 17:57 Okay, but in JF I can do it from any song... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-11-15 17:58 I could add that in a future release - please open a feature request on Github if you have a Github account. If not, I'll create one later ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ultrahkr · 2023-11-15 18:17 Sure thing! Give about one hour or so... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DistantRefaktor · 2023-11-15 18:31 Honestly? Something more akin to WinAMP Modern, pre-6. What I like most about it is the two filter pane above the song list that have the artist and album to easily filter. This is good because I will remember an artist long before I remember what album something is on. A couple of other things I like about it. The play list to the side to see what is playing (and to build list when I bother). And the player controls at the top. I end up hitting whatever OS toolbar is down there when things are like that. Something about this app that could improve it overall. I like that you can remove most of the columns, but why not the favorite column? It is not clear that "PLAY LATER" means add to Play Queue. I don't like how when you go Artist -> Select an Artist, you get a unneeded blurb about the artist and a list of Albums, but no list of songs. I also really don't like that you can't see everything. Only 50 at a time at most. Maybe that should be the default? I was very confused while one view was showing NiN and another wasn't until I noticed that. An option to disable the sub menu under Albums would be nice. Weird that Albums has it but Artist and Songs doesn't. I do like the selection of sane color themes. More things should have this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-11-15 19:09 Thanks for the feedback > I like that you can remove most of the columns, but why not the favorite column You can. It's named "Fav." for compactness but you can hide it just like any other tracklist column > It is not clear that "PLAY LATER" means add to Play Queue Good suggestion. I'll probably rename it "Add to Queue" > I don't like how when you go Artist -> Select an Artist, you get a unneeded blurb about the artist and a list of Albums, but no list of songs. The "Top Songs" list sorts by popularity and comes from the server using data from Last.fm (for most Subsonic backends; not sure what Jellyfin uses). I can probably add an "All Songs" option to that view switcher on the artist page. > Weird that Albums has it but Artist and Songs doesn't. Are you talking about the filter pane? I can probably add one for All Tracks eventually, at least for Jellyfin. Subsonic currently doesn't have a dedicated endpoint to retrieve all songs, let alone filter on them. So filtering would have to be done locally by streaming the full library song list through the filter. This will eventually change with the OpenSubsonic API expansion effort though. > The play list to the side to see what is playing I will also probably add a toggleable sidebar eventually, with a view switcher within itself to show either the lyrics of the current song, or the play queue in a compacted view (with reduced interactivity compared to the full tracklist view on the Now Playing page). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DistantRefaktor · 2023-11-15 19:22 I went to the demo site listed here: https://www.navidrome.org/demo/ I go to Artists -> NiN -> The Slip, above the songs it has SHUFFLE, PLAY NEXT, PLAY LATER, ADD TO PLAYLIST, SHARE, DOWNLOAD Also, same page, and others, clicking on the Columns to Display menu doesn't show a Fav or Favorite. Cool. Toggles are nice. No, on the side, under Album it has All, Random (Which is weird. This would be a song thing no?), Favorites spelled wrong, Top Rated, Recently Added, Recently Played, and Most Played. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-11-15 19:26 OH - you're accessing the WebUI of the Navidrome demo server 😂! Supersonic is an alternative desktop frontend, so you have to download it and launch it and then put that URL in the Connect to Server dialog, along with the demo/demo user/pass combo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DistantRefaktor · 2023-11-15 19:53 OK. That demo link on GitHub is confusing then. I click on that thinking that is what you were showing off. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-11-15 19:55 yeah I should probably make it a little less prominent then, or just list the demo server url as a code block in the readme and not even link to it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrashley · 2023-11-15 20:22 I did a quick search, but couldn't find Chromecast anywhere. I use Chromecast audio devices, and I adore them. Any chance this is on your roadmap? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-11-15 21:38 Yes, but it might be awhile. I am working on uPnP/DLNA casting but I don't personally have Chromecast devices to test with. Also there is an existing uPnP/DLNA project in Go that I can adapt code from but not sure if one exists for Chromecast. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrashley · 2023-11-15 22:45 For Desktop that is definitely a more sensible priority. 👍🏻 Keep up the good work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UltimateMonky · 2023-11-16 02:40 I have an extra chrome cast laying around that I never touch, if it would help at all I could gladly mail it to you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-11-16 03:30 Thanks, but that's not necessary at all. They're cheap; I can always pick up a Chromecast later on. And I even have one stereo setup that doesn't have any streaming receiver so I could use a chromecast there. My comment was more of a subtle hint to potential contributors: "hey, if you have a Chromecast and know Go programming, please feel free to help out!!" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BAAAASS · 2023-11-16 06:53 If anybody needs new inspiration, they should definitely look at the old Zune software. The device was stupid, but the software (music player) was beautiful and elegant. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lachlan-00 · 2023-11-16 10:31 It's the best subsonic client on desktop I've used. It helped me find a bug with ampache subsonic. I didn't know you could remove the .view from calls too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-11-16 18:58 Yeah, the .view suffix always seemed strange to me. Not sure why it's even there at all. I didn't consciously decide not to use it either; I just am using a fork of an unmaintained Subsonic API client library and it didn't use .view. Even weirder is if you look at the official documentation it looks like the endpoints *don't* have a .view suffix at all, and it's only in some example requests that you even see any reference to a .view suffix. E.g. looking at http://www.subsonic.org/pages/api.jsp#getPlaylists you'd have no idea that `/rest/getPlaylists.view` was even an endpoint. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lachlan-00 · 2023-11-16 20:22 I never used the original but maybe it's a holdover from whatever webserver it used? Either way I got the flatpak, saw the urls missing view and checked against the official demo to make sure it was allowed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UltimateMonky · 2023-11-16 21:27 I gotcha! I just know how small costs can add up really quickly :D. I'll work on the Go part of the equation for you...by learning it first!
