[non self hosted] : Cheap Services You Still Pay For reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- softwarebuyer2015 · 2023-11-15 14:23 My Bitwarden renewal came through this morning. It's still $10 per year. I was about to cancel, but I thought what the heck at $10, I'll keep it on out of principle and to show support. I also have a tutanota encrypted email, which costs little more than pocket change over the year. I hardly use it, but it's there. I wondered then, if this community had any little gems to share - services they pay for that are let's say under $30 annually. I think we can exclude VPS, since lots of people will probably have them already. I'm going to cross post at /r/opensource too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Aciied · 2023-11-15 14:47 I pay for Home Assistant cloud and for Bitwarden ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tr0lcho_420 · 2023-11-15 14:48 I only have a mailbox.org account that costs 3€ per month if we don't count domains and VPS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CactusBoyScout · 2023-11-15 14:52 I wouldn't say they're "cheap" but I consider them good value and I don't really feel the need to replace them with self-hosting... Spotify and iCloud Photos. Spotify is just a great service with 95% of the content that I want for a reasonable price. And their recommendations are actually good. I also use Plexamp for music that's not on Spotify but that's the minority of music I want to listen to. iCloud Photos is just so hands-off that I never even have to think about my photos, which are very important to me. They're always backed up to the cloud, synced across devices, and offloaded from my phone without me having to do anything. I just don't see a reason to explore self-hosted alternatives when iCloud Photos is so dead simple and reliable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Manwater34 · 2023-11-15 14:56 Paying for Plex yuck ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigResolution2160 · 2023-11-15 14:57 I'm still on the tuta~~nota~~ original subscription, which costs 12 euros a year. I host a server that a lot of friends and family use, they can download native Plex apps on every platform they have available, and all these apps (in my experience work) flawlessly. I've trialled Jellyfin and Emby, their apps either don't exist on some platforms/need third party apps, or are quite clunky in comparison to Plex. If you're using these types of services for yourself and on specific platforms, alternatives make perfect sense, but when less tech-savvy people are involved, Plex is still the best option imho. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SadMaverick · 2023-11-15 15:10 Bitwarden & PurelyMail for me. I'm still using the free email hosting for my custom domain on Google, and I don't have loads of addresses, about 5 for my family members, a couple for shared use, then I use the catchall for myself, but for some things I need to be able to reply using a specific address (e.g. banking@domain.com, legal@domain.com) and I have to create that address in Google to add it as an alias to be able to send using it. So in total I probably need about 20 addresses, which is too expensive when I look at the paid email services. It looks like I could use simplelogin instead to create specific addresses for my domain that I can forward to my catchall mailbox (or to another family members' mailbox) but still reply using them, which might let me reduce the number of actual mailboxes to 5, which is much more affordable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- solarsparq · 2023-11-16 00:51 I supported Bitwarden for at least 5 years, and like you.... walked over the $10/year bridge. (I could be wrong, perhaps you can use developer mode and copy/paste in a smart home skill to make it work with self-hosted HA?) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fmillion · 2023-11-16 05:50 What's funny is that even the commercial cloud smart home platforms often have problems. So if wife approval means infinite 9's of uptime, you're never gonna achieve that. Arguably running it internally is *better* because it'll work even if the Internet goes out. I just wish it was easier to find devices that work fully offline with HA. *Waaaaaay* too many smart products are designed to be 100% dependent on the manufacturer's infrastructure, and treat "hacks" to reconnect them directly to something like HA as "security vulnerabilities which need to be patched". Case in point: I have a handful of older ESP8266-based Merkury (Walmart) RGB bulbs that work great with HA. They're based on Tuya firmware, a Chinese manufacturer that's rebranded by tons of no-name cheap designs. At some point a firmware update got released that blocked the OTA method that was used to upload Tasmota firmware because "security". (Now they switched to a lesser-known microcontroller - there's still a way to hack them but it's gotten to where it requires disassembly and microsoldering.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fmillion · 2023-11-16 05:53 Very few things apply with that definition sadly. You can find RGB bulbs and switches and such that are open source. But I implore you to find larger appliances like washing machines, garage door openers, hell even cars, that can run entirely disconnected from the manufacturer's services and communicate directly (and only) with HA. HA calling out to the manufacturer's API doesn't really qualify as "self-hosted" to me, because at that point HA is just a translation and convenience layer, it's not actually managing your smart home itself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YokoHama22 · 2023-11-16 05:53 You mean cloud hosting vs hosting the site on a private server? - I always assumed most small-scale sites are just cloud hosted. Rgb light bulbs should, imo, revert back to a normal color (when turned off, then switching on), if there's no internet connection. Personally, I don't like smart/rgb light bulbs, but do like switches. So, for me at least, I just don't support that part of the industry. For other things like washing machines and such, I don't see the need to have them internet connected. Especially as in my experience the things you can manage via an app still require you to (have been) present at the machine itself. I'd not even bother setting them up, as I did woth my current washing machine. At the end of the day, if I am required to uses a manufacturers app/cloud/whatever, I much rather won't buy it. After the initial connection, the internet traffic you send will be directly between devices. You could also check out Headscale. It's an unofficial open source self hosted implementation of the Tailscale control server. https://github.com/juanfont/headscale ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JackDostoevsky · 2023-11-16 16:01 Oh I see. Wireguard does pretty well on its own, the only thing is that you have to initiate the connection from *behind* my ISP- controlled router/modem. From everything I've read it sounds like the main advantage of Tailscale is if you want to simplify the setup of WG tunnels, which isn't really something I need assistance with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- techsnapp · 2023-11-16 16:07 Good input. Prior to using CopyMeThat, i was using Fossil (fossil-scm.org) and writing my recipes in markdown either within the web UI or fossil or in vim. A IPv4 VPS solves this That makes sense. Some people don't use IPv6 and immediately jump to proxying from a VPS. In some cases, it's totally fine to have some services only accessible over IPv6. I still don't think CGNAT is a good solution for anything. Some providers instead have an entirely IPv6 network, and use a technology called 464XLAT to allow connections to legacy IPv4-only servers. No CGNAT needed. For example this is what most phone companies in the USA do. If you have a phone with any of the large US providers, it's likely only got an IPv6 address. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- touche112 · 2023-11-16 18:19 Google Photos. Thanks for the input! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3p0h0p3 · 2023-11-16 20:22 The short answer is: yes. Generally, every person who can afford it should make use of [[ChatGPT]] as a generalist tutor, question genie, and rubberduck easily worth $20 for an hour each month. I can't tell you how many every day activities or questions are best answered with ChatGPT instead of searching the web for our family, though external verification can often be worth your time as well. Further, anyone who relies upon generating text of any kind for their special interests should be able to find ways to make good use of it; even Terence Tao uses it. The difference between the 4 and 3.5 freely available today is significant. I don't know how much you've practiced with it, but I suggest we all benefit from practicing with its incarnations (I'm still learning, and I've been following this space for many years). Incrementally, collaboratively, and dialectically working over a chain of prompts often produces the best results. I suggest it's especially valuable in at least two cases. (1) When you are nearly completely blind or new, in which you can vomit words and ChatGPT can often infer your intent, find appropriate terminology (you might not even know how to ask a question correctly), ask you the fitting questions to narrow the search (you may have to ask it to ask you), and at least send you in what is likely a better direction (if not tell you the best answers). (2) When you are already an expert, and you instead more intentionally massage and comb through various outputs by shaping and shotgunning multiple streams of output for what is salient to your problem at hand. It may help with boilerplate, translation (this is a broad notion), editing, and exploration (the partial randomness is valuable). Don't expect flawless output. Be prepared to doubt and test (including making use of multiple sessions) what may be hallucinations, otherwise you may be taken down a delusional rabbithole of confidently incorrect confabulations. With practice, you will find ChatGPT can often lower the friction, limit cognitive load and irritation in doing all yourself, and, in some cases, save a ton of time as well. The expert who knows something is wrong with the output can just say it, and ChatGPT will often find it, especially with some guidance or error logs. You're looking to help ChatGPT develop a theory of your mind and your context (show it your terminal output, specifications, and so forth), and so confirmation and disconfirmation help shape future output. You'll ask ChatGPT to help you generate tests for the code in tandem so that you can bootstrap your way into sufficiently clean code. Politeness actually can improve results (seriously), as can explaining the urgency of aspects of your project. If you are disappointed in something, explain that. In some cases, you may find it worthy to have ChatGPT simulate dialectics with itself, to make explicit to you an inner monologue of the steps of its reasoning (which may overcome a lack of adaptivity in working memory). Breaking problems down into fitting structures of smaller problems can allow you to find ChatGPT's sweetspot. Ask it to ask you questions, and ask it to offer ideas on how the code might fail or be improved. Use that information to ask it to recraft your code. Sometimes you'll provide modifications of the code to work with as well. Finally, you can ask it to clean up your code and ensure it's commented; sometimes it is best to use additional sessions to have fresh eyes to consider the code as well. For some problems, it is wise to build a library of snippet prompts and use [Custom instructions](https://h0p3.neocities.org/#Promptcraft% 3A%20Custom%20Instructions). Time will tell how useful GPTagents will be and when. I can't say its well suited to all problems for all people (the more niche, bleeding edge recent, or further away from the average of the training and middleware, the less likely are you are to get the depth, accuracy, and salience you seek), but you may be surprised what it can learn in just a few shots. You may find the playground or API offers other possibilities for you as well. My suggestion is to attempt to integrate the tool into your life over 6 months. It may take some time before it begins saving you a ton of time (including enabling you to accomplish what you couldn't already). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- s3r3ng · 2023-11-16 20:51 Bitwarden, Paid [addy.io](https://addy.io), protonmail paid via crypto, [privacy.com](https://privacy.com) virtual credit cards, MySudo voip numbers, a [jmp.chat](https://jmp.chat) number or two. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fmillion · 2023-11-16 21:10 Actually that's very good to know! I mean finding films and TV is one thing, but honestly I can't be bothered doing it for music. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fmillion · 2023-11-16 21:19 Yeah, washing machines don't need to be smart. One example I *can* see obvious advantages in though is garage door openers. "Did I leave the garage open?"/"I *did* leave it open, can I close it remotely?" are awesome use cases for one. But at least Chamberlain doesn't feel that us having control over our garage door opener is "authorized". I'm not sure if their latest shenanigans killed HomeKit access, but at the very least it most likely killed any type of local offline access (if that was even possible to begin with), meaning you probably have to now go through their API, which they could shut down any time they please and *that's too bad* (see Insteon). Nest is another good example. I used to have a Python script that would pull the state from my Nest every minute and log it (indoor temp, HVAC setting, current HVAC run mode). Was really useful for doing my *own offline* tracking of usage vs temperatures. I also added in pulling weather data, the idea was to predict cost of HVAC based on forecast and history. It actually worked pretty well. Then they deprecated "Works with Nest" and made everyone switch to a new developer platform. I'm not even sure if I can do my use case with what they offer now (at least not without agreeing to a huge TOS and possibly having some serious API limits...to a device that's *in my own home* that I should be able to *query directly* without going through the Internet at all...it is sharing my LAN after all!) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fmillion · 2023-11-16 21:22 To be fair I just timed a load on my "dumb" washer and use that as the benchmark. A load on double rinse cycle takes about 35 minutes. I set a timer for that much time and it's either just finished or close enough that I can stand and wait 30 seconds. Some appliances *don't* need to be smart, or would need a lot *more* functionality to be able to be worth being "smart". A washer-dryer combo that also had a robotic folder might be worth being smart for example. As for lights though, self-contained smart bulbs are a blessing if you are tired of getting up to turn out the lights and then walking back across in the dark, and even more of a blessing if you live in an older home without grounded wiring (since you simply leave the light switch on all the time). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuswong · 2023-11-16 22:48 I took the time to teach my kids how to use a password manager with Bitwarden on my self hosted instance. Similar to the example you provided with the lights: this isn't a revolutionary new capability being added, it just saves you from inconvenience. Back to my example, in British terraced homes, the water pressure can drop if multiple neighbours are having showers or washing clothes. I could never be sure that the next load would take as long as the previous one did. You'd be right to say that that's a separate issue to be tackled separately (like the grounded wiring) - but a smart device is a much cheaper fix than retroffitting better plumbing across a dozen homes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Door_Vegetable · 2023-11-17 04:13 I just use spark as my main email client, you can generate app specific passwords which is great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fortera · 2023-11-17 07:29 Bitwarden and Email.
