Jellyfin reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxmel · 2023-11-15 04:01 So, I just got jellyfin running in docker and so far just uploaded some photos. I'm just wondering what most of you are using it for. I'm asking because I really don't have a music connection like I had many years ago, best I pay for Apple music. Also I have no movie collection either. Maybe I don't even need jellyfin, but I love selfhosting and jellyfin is fantastic in it's possible uses. I don't understand the live TV or DVR options I'm still playing with the settings. I guess I'm asking you guys to tell me why I need jellyfin and what else I could use it for. Thanks for understanding my thoughts. You guys here have thought me so much about selfhosting and I appreciate it greatly! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gaming09 · 2023-11-15 04:12 Jellyfin, Plex, emby are media hosts. Meaning they host movies and TV shows on various devices.they track your watch history and you can stop and start on any device and you continue from where you left off. Some of these have a photos app and you can sorta use it like a cheap Google photos but a lot of this is depreciated. There are uses to host music as well. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jellyfin ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tangbuster · 2023-11-15 04:13 Jellyfin is basically an open source Plex. But it can share media like books and photos. Don’t think Plex supports those yet. Yes, its main use for most people is going to be for sharing/serving movies and TV shows. I still prefer Plex so Jellyfin is my backup these days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- falcorns_balls · 2023-11-15 04:51 Radarr for movies, Sonarr for TV shows, Lidarr for music and Prowlarr to aggregate torrent/usenet sources and sync to the other arr apps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxmel · 2023-11-15 04:53 Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- falcorns_balls · 2023-11-15 04:56 I'm in the same boat because i have had the lifetime plexpass since the late beta days. But I do like Jellyfin a lot. I use plex mainly, but Jellyfin is a lot faster and I'm ready to migrate over to it at the flip of a hat. Jellyfin is so much quicker to get into a movie than plex is. I feel like plex takes forever to load in comparison. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GolemancerVekk · 2023-11-15 10:55 Here's an idea, check out ytdl-sub: https://github.com/jmbannon/ytdl- sub You can set it to track a YouTube channel and it will download videos **and** set up nice collections for you in Jellyfin, which you'll never lose again and can watch without ads. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IllegalD · 2023-11-15 11:35 Something fun to play with, find some IPTV m3u files and XML TV guides on Github, and have a play with Live TV/PVR features! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brancliff · 2023-11-15 13:19 Jellyfin is really heavyweight if you're just using it for photos. I would recommend you either pick up another one of its libraries or switch to a photo solution like Lychee Also, if you want to start a movie collection, it is very easy to find random things out there in r/OpenDirectories ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Trustworthy_Fartzzz · 2023-11-15 14:59 I just recently saw this pop up in my feeds. Gonna give it a go when I get a chance. Looks very cool! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxmel · 2023-11-15 16:09 Wow fantastic idea, I'll check it out. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spicy45 · 2023-11-15 21:46 If you don’t need it, you don’t need it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxmel · 2023-11-16 15:56 I've looked at this and it's very complicated at least to me. I can't make sense of how to use it with jellyfin. I'll keep trying to figure it out. Instructions are very good. Thanks again!
