Windows Is My Primary Server (WIMPS) users reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BadgerPrudent31 · 2023-11-14 21:57 Has anyone used Wimps here? Windows is comfortable for me and this looks like an easy way to set up a home media server serving my smart tv and torrenting. What are your experiences? https://github.com/Xaque8787/WIMPS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-14 22:07 That Windows is a great desktop OS, awesome for AD, Exchange and file server for end users, and that's about it. Even if you use Server Core, it's just not a proper candidate to run containers, WSL or not. Containers for Windows are a joke. Mediaserver on Linux with containers and be done. If you need a GUI, you can install any GUI, if not, also okay. Sure you can run Plex ans Co on Windows, bit you loose all the nice ability you get from any Linux OS and using containers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autogyrophilia · 2023-11-14 22:15 It also has the best free* file dedup out there. Specially with ReFS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-14 22:18 True, that's why I mentioned file server. ReFS with dedupe and compresssion and VSS on top makes a pleasent file server for user data. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-11-14 23:46 Never used it, don't trust random github repos with only 3 stars, and I don't feel comfortable using turnkey solutions or "configuration scripts". I am a firm believer in the maxim that configuration is a deeply personal thing. Therefore, I would not use someone's configuration scripts because they are configured as *he* wants it, not as *I* want it. Running Docker Desktop on Windows is not exactly hard. And once you have docker desktop running, it is not exactly hard to run whatever other software / media server you might like. Windows is my primary workstation OS because I am legally blind and Windows has the best on-screen magnifier on the market. No other product, whether commercial or free, whether standalone or baked into the WM, comes even remotely close. So I use Windows. But within Windows, I leverage both WSL and Docker to run linux tools properly. All of my remote servers are linux. My home server is linux. More than half of my virtual machines are linux. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- root_switch · 2023-11-15 00:00 I’m not against what you’re saying but this doesn’t have anything to do with containers after looking at some of the source code. It’s basically just an app that allows you to download other apps, specially the windows exe installers and installs it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JzJad12 · 2023-11-15 02:56 Yeah refs is nice until it breaks. I'll wait another 5 years before I try it in production again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-15 05:45 Everyone has their own experiences with systems, I have yet to see either NTFS, XFS or ReFS fail. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-15 05:46 Agreed, just wanted to highlight that a Windows Server for /r/selfhosted is probably not the best or ideal pick since almost all selfhosted software is container based or can be container based. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ultrahkr · 2023-11-15 08:28 You should check windows server update release notes, there was a high chance that if ReFS was mentioned it would break... Seems to have gotten better... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jealy · 2023-11-15 10:41 You *can* just run Linux in a VM for all your container-based needs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-15 11:00 Thanks, correct, never said it has to be bare metal Linux, just that it has to be Linux. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autogyrophilia · 2023-11-15 11:10 Man I'm a fucking moron. "Legally blind, what an odd way to describe not caring about law and piracy" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-11-15 11:33 I would submit that there is a distinction between not caring and not being aware of something. Therefore, 'legally blind' would indicate someone is not aware of something, and not not caring about that something. If I said I'm *legally apathetic*, that would imply I don't care about law and piracy.
