Dirt cheap NAS reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MBle · 2023-11-14 11:11 Hello, I would like to setup a dirty cheap NAS for my local network. I want to spend near the price of no money. I have multiple 3.5' HDD sata drives and I want to access them from my network. I could place them in my desktop, but it is not on 24/7, and power usage would be too high for this use case. I have RPI Zero W, Radxa Zero 1 (although no idea how am I supposed to put firmware in this thing), and Odroid C2. What are my options? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dotinho · 2023-11-14 11:20 Your can use Odroid, it’s similar to RPI. Just mount your disks and share as samba over your network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- springs87 · 2023-11-14 12:19 How many drives? You can normally pick up cheap 2nd hand nas boxes for next to nothing ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sodium111 · 2023-11-14 12:44 I am in the same boat as OP — can you share any advice on where to look, and any examples of different brands, models, or specs to look for to make sure I’m not buying crap? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mirx · 2023-11-14 12:45 What would be examples of this? I always see small, old and overpriced. So I do what OP does. Plug them into my proxmox server or desktop. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- springs87 · 2023-11-14 12:48 Depends what you actually want to do with them. These days a lot of people see nas boxes as the do everything kind of box. But if you want to stick drives in and host them over the network, any should work. Netgear, qnap, synology, terramaster, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MBle · 2023-11-14 12:54 I would like at least 4 bay. I looked around on Polish auction services, but they cost 2000PLN+ (\~500USD) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reklis · 2023-11-14 13:18 How would you connect a bunch of sata drives to an odroid? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OhK4Foo7 · 2023-11-14 13:23 Reminds me of that joke about looking for a quarter you dropped where the light is better even though you dropped it in the dark. What you need is a miracle. You have 3.5 inch drives and some SBC devices. How do you plan to hook them together without buying some hardware? Your options are slim and next to none as far as I can see. What kind of suggestions are you looking for? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MBle · 2023-11-14 13:46 I do not mean without buying any hardware, what I need is something that is cheap on the second hand market, or something that is cheap on aliexpress ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dotinho · 2023-11-14 13:50 This is one example [this case 5 bays](https://amzn.eu/d/4ptddQg). They are many options here. The trick is something to USB on your odroid. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CrimeShowInfluencer · 2023-11-14 13:56 There are USB to SATA cables, though not sure how good they are. https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61IZSZQsKJL.\_AC\_SX679\_.jpg ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnApexBread · 2023-11-14 14:26 Have you tried using a USB drive bay station with proxmox before? I'm debating getting a 5 bay station, plugging it into my proxmox and passing the USB through to an OMV VM but I'm not sure if that will work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brody5895 · 2023-11-14 15:06 Some routers have a USB port and nas options in the settings. There are some cheap multi hard drive to USB adapters on eBay that might work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EthhicsGradient · 2023-11-14 15:14 https://www.crowdsupply.com/gnubee/personal-cloud-2#products Not sure if it's your best option. But it's an option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dcabines · 2023-11-14 20:18 Those are for SSD only. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tobotti1 · 2023-11-14 23:34 Steal an office pc from an office and install truenas on it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HelloHash · 2023-11-15 03:39 People chuck old PCs all the time too, OP need to drive around his neighborhood on garbage day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Morgennebel · 2023-11-15 07:02 3D print clamps for a tower of disks, use USB to SATA and build a Frankenstein NAS. Better option Wyse 5070 Extended (100€) with LSI 8e (50€) used SAS controller to connect maximum of 8 disks and 3d printed tower. Something like https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2939751 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ghoarder · 2023-11-15 10:03 Not exactly, they should work with most 2.5" drives either SSD or HDD but they won't be able to pull enough power over USB to power a 3.5" drive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-17 18:11 ## Post Removed Hey, MBle!
