Jellyfin+adblocker What is the best setup for me please ? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dnatir · 2023-11-14 10:03 Hello I have an old PC. I used to have ubuntu server with adguard and jellyfin. I would like to have a better setup to open safely my jellyfin to the web and to automatically update everything that needs to be updated. I tried tuenas. I'm not very familiar with it. Sometimes jellyfin is stuck at "deploying". I had to reinstall many times. I also wanted to add cloudflare tunnel to open to the internet without opening a port on my router. I also would like to have a raid on some hdd to be safe for personal data and not to expose it to internet. Is there a better setup for my use ? Thank you :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-11-14 10:33 In my opinion, you should use docker (docker compose). You can install and uninstall your services as many times as you want, without loosing info or configs, and without messing with your os with dependencies. I think almost any Linux distribution will do. I use Ubuntu server, but yeah, whatever works for you, if you're using docker it shouldnt matter. If you go that way, I'd recommend linuxserver.io docker stuff. They're awesome, with good docs, and easy to follow. Pretty straightforward. I'd also recommend to use something like nginx proxy manager if you're going to open to the Web, and have a reverse proxy. About cloudflare , I've heard that it's against their tos to stream copyrighted media stuff. I haven't used it, so I can't be clear about it, someone else could help you more in that subject. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dnatir · 2023-11-14 11:35 Thank you for your answer :) I will look into linuxserver.io What do you use to keep everything updated ? Do i need another server in the cloud to use nginx proxy ? If yes I'm looking for a simpler and free solution if possible. I heard also about tailscale Funnel but idk anything about it. would you make a RAID on ubuntu to backup stuff ? zfs on truenas looks good. Do you think the linux distibution I choose can influe the electic consumption of my installation ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-11-14 11:43 To keep everything updated, I just do it manually. Docker Compose down, docker compose up -d, and it will auto pull the newest image. There are tools like watchtower to keep it updated automatically, but I just prefer to do it myself. You don't need another server to run nginx proxy manager, It's just another docker container in your pc. It just receive requests on the opened port, and send them to the service they belong. That way you only open one port. But you don't want to open ports, so this might not be of your interest. I haven't used tailscale, so that's something I can't answer. I don't do backups. I will in the future as I have nextcloud, and will start with immich anytime soon. But haven't worried about it yet, I'm still learning. For the last one, yeah, probably, but it's also possible that it would be so little that you won't notice from one to other. There are diestros running lot of unnecessary stuff, which will make your pc idle with a higher cpu use, while there are others that will do barely nothing when idling. Anyway, you will have some services running in the background, and those will be the ones using most of your cpu, so the distro you choose, I think won't matter much (maybe a few cents per year?) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pvaleriano · 2023-11-14 13:53 I'm not sure if running only docker compose up updates the image. I believe that your yml must point to the latest tag and then run docker compose pull ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dnatir · 2023-11-14 13:56 Thank you for your answer then where is hosted the ip of the proxy for nginx ? Have you tried truenas ? Is there any reason you wouldn't use it ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-11-14 13:57 Yes, it should point to the latest, otherwise it will always use the same version ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-11-14 14:04 I don't really understand your question. It's a reverse proxy hosted in your own computer. It's not for outgoing requests (usual proxy), but for received requests. Nginx address would be your public ip and port (usually 80 or 443), nginx will receive the request from your router, and take it to the relevant service, hosted anywhere inside your home lan that you have previously configured (for instance, 192.168.1.5:8765). I haven't used truenas, no idea about it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dnatir · 2023-11-14 14:04 would watchtower take care of this ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dnatir · 2023-11-14 14:41 Oh okay I should read more about reverse proxies. thanks ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-11-14 15:12 I think so. Haven't used it, but it's goal is to keep your images updated so it should. If you go my way, just need to make sure you add latest to the image name so it will always update it when you do down/up to the compose ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-11-14 15:14 Yw! Hope I have helped! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dnatir · 2023-11-14 16:41 Yes thanks :)
