tu|du|di - A personal task and project management app reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cvicpp · 2023-11-13 15:23 Hello /r/selfhosted community! I've been working on a personal project called "tu|du|di" – a simple, self-hosted GTD-and-others inspired task management web application built with Sinatra. I'm reaching out to get some feedback and ideas for improvement. **Features:** * Task management with due dates, priorities, and completion status. * Project organization with support for nested tasks. * Areas-of-responsibility-based categorization for better task segmentation. * User authentication for personal use (or small teams but this was not intended) * Simple, clean, responsive UI suitable for desktop and mobile use. **Tech Stack:** * Backend: Sinatra framework, Ruby * Database: SQLite with ActiveRecord * Frontend: ERB templates with Bootstrap for styling **Why tu|du|di?** I started this project because after several years of experimenting with every commercial solution out there, my mind started to become something between a jelly candy and a dark thunderstorm cloud. So I went from here to there and I couldn't find something that fits my want and needs. I decided to spend some hours (less than 8 so far) and create a **simple**, **minimal** crud. My only goal is to create order from the chaos in my life and help you too, If you are interested. I have some pretty good ideas and I hope to integrate best-of features I've experienced from different look alike apps. I would love to get your thoughts on: * Features that you think would be useful. * UI/UX suggestions. * Security best practices for self-hosted apps. * Any general advice or feedback. The project is still in its early stages, and I'm open to all kinds of ideas and contributions. If you're interested, you can check out the project on GitHub [https://github.com/chrisvel/tududi](https://github. com/chrisvel/tududi). To be honest, I would really like to move the functionality to the client and use client encryption for the best security. I will be also experimenting with database encryption. I have no indents to make this uber complex (at least on the UI) or create a service that needs 10 docker containers to read and write to a DB. I am planning to add a simple notes page and lots of visuals (colors, badges, icons for people with ADHD and OCD). And also add a full testing suite because I created this in 8 hours in order to get a system running quickly. Recurring tasks, tags and backup will be on the way. Thank you for your time and input! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skyrunner15 · 2023-11-13 18:15 Any plans for a docker container to try out? The idea is a good one to keep all tasks in one spot while grouping by date and topic. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cvicpp · 2023-11-13 20:07 Sure, I will try to create one tomorrow. I will add filters as well but it will take me a few days. I need to create a task for it :P ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skyrunner15 · 2023-11-13 22:47 Ok lemme know as I'll install and try... I haven't found a perfect tool to juggle my work and personal tasks. Obviously caldav down the line wouldn't hurt... but scope creep! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PhoneNeeded2Register · 2023-11-13 22:58 Looks clean and polished, good job! Can we install the program and use it out of the box directly without hosting it? Also, is the database compatible with other programs or importable by tu|du|di? This question is because rather than hosting the app, one may use other tools to update and share their database with other applications. Is there a dark/night mode available? If yes, is it the default color scheme? Also, I suggest having a high contrast theme with options to scale UI for those with visual impairment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxmel · 2023-11-13 23:29 Docker Image would be nice addition, lot of setup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheZokerDE · 2023-11-14 01:28 Would be amazing to see support for the tasks.org app. The app is amazing and would love to add a web interface for my tasks synced with that app. The app supports caldav: https://www.tasks.org/docs/caldav_intro ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cvicpp · 2023-11-14 08:41 Thanks! It's not an electron kind of app so you can't just "run" it, but I am planning to create a docker image so you can just pull and start with no installation. The database is a simple sqlite3 one and you are allowed to access the data externally for now. In the future I am planning to add full encryption so your data remain as much secure as possible. What would may help is: * An option to export all your tasks in text/markdown format * An api accessed with a token so you can poll and connect with other apps Both are very possible to be added but they are not a priority right now. Dark mode is a priority. I am a die-hard fan of dark mode and every time I look at the app my eyes hurt so I have to decrease the monitor brightness. I started with the minimum possible to get my tasks created and now I will add a dark mode option. Visualizations are also a top priority for me. I do not intent to turn this app into a circus but at least offer 3-4 options to change some colors (e.g. labels/badges, maybe navbar) and of course add icons like notion. I get bored and distracted very easily, rotating some color schemes will keep me motivated to use the app. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cvicpp · 2023-11-14 08:41 Working on it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cvicpp · 2023-11-14 08:42 Not a first priority but I will surely take a look. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cvicpp · 2023-11-14 14:53 Please check this out: [https://github.com/chrisvel/tududi#docker](htt ps://github.com/chrisvel/tududi#docker). Any feedback will be appreciated. Let me know If you have any issues. Feel free to open tickets in github. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cvicpp · 2023-11-14 14:54 https://github.com/chrisvel/tududi#docker Feedback will be appreciated! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skyrunner15 · 2023-11-15 09:52 Up and running! I'm traveling for work today so I will totally try this out for tasks. I noticed it wanted https by default though - I reverse proxy in and throw my own certs on top so I don't really need that layer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cvicpp · 2023-11-15 09:56 Great! If you check the [Dockerfile](https://github.com/chrisvel/tudud i/blob/3e80ff4cdd691407ec7aa361dd8ff951302903da/Dockerfile#L17) I automatically create certs by default to prevent people from running with simple http and to automate as much as possible. But I will definitely add a flag as an option to use these or provide yours. I hope that you find this useful as I do. BTW, I am adding **tags** now, a new image will soon be available. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skyrunner15 · 2023-11-15 13:53 This is a cool tool - it definitely fills some gaps for me! One bit about the projects though - if I click on Areas & Projects and the project doesn't have any tasks, I can't see it on that page. For example if I want to rename or delete one that I created - or avoid creating duplicate projects. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cvicpp · 2023-11-15 14:56 Thank you! I will definitely spend time on the projects section. I have dozens of them and I want to organize and prioritize them.
