StreamShuttle - A modern privacy-first self-hosted NVR / CCTV system reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rome390 · 2023-11-13 15:23 Hello selfhosted community, I'm posting to let you know about StreamShuttle a new self-hosted software solution that makes running your own video monitoring system a breeze. I just recently went public with the first release and I am looking for more people to help check it out and get some feedback. You can check it out at [https://streamshuttle.com/](https://streamshuttle.com/). I along with a few other testers, have been running stable builds for a few months now (on both Linux and Windows). I made sure it has all the features you would expect from a modern CCTV/NVR system (alerts, motion/object/audio detection, two-way audio, secure remote access) out of the box, without having to deal with any external services and programs. StreamShuttle is also extremely modular and will have a rich plugin system allowing you to tie-in to most parts of the system or provide other integrations. The main goal of StreamShuttle is to make something simple that EVERYONE; not just enthusiasts can wrap their head around and manage. I took a very opinionated approach to building a system that I think works for well for most people in most scenarios. Trying to hide much of the complexity other existing systems have had to contend with. Despite not being fully documented yet StreamShuttle already has both rest and websocket client support that will make integrating with 3rd party systems like home assistant as easy as a few clicks. Adding cameras to the homeassistant dashboard is already a breeze ([https://community.home-assistant.io/t/adding-cameras-from- streamshuttle-into-the-ha-dashboard/619821](https://community.home- assistant.io/t/adding-cameras-from-streamshuttle-into-the-ha- dashboard/619821)) Our documentation still has a little ways to go in making sure all edge cases are covered but the quick start guide should have you up and running in no time. This is just the beginning and StreamShuttle is only going to get better from here. *documentation also has additional screenshots* *Get started now for* ***free*** *with a one month trial. No credit card required!* Thanks for reading and I look forward to any questions and feedback! \- Josh (Founder / CEO) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RedditSlayer2020 · 2023-11-13 16:43 Thank you for your AD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZombieLinux · 2023-11-13 16:52 Lmfao paid and incomplete documentation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neldonado · 2023-11-13 17:01 Why would I pay $10/mo for an undocumented untested piece of software vs $40/yr blue Iris or $0/yr frigate? What sets you apart that justifies the $10/mo? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Square_Home_967 · 2023-11-13 17:35 This is very cool ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rome390 · 2023-11-13 17:51 Hey Neldonado, Thanks for asking! First i'd like to point out that it's not "untested". It's new but we have many users that have been using the software now for months; before it was ever even released publicly. I have used / tested many of the alternatives including the ones you mentioned. We do offer a "Lifetime License" that allows you to make a 1x purchase instead of utilizing a subscription. BI is actually 79.99 and not 40 like you mentioned. Although frigate is free, setting up and managing it the price reflects that. It's not easy for someone who does not have the know-how to actually try and setup and manage a system like that. They also do not have any official support mechanism and I don't think frigate has any type of 2-way audio support to work with devices like video doorbells. The main thing that sets StreamShuttle apart from the rest is ease of use. StreamShuttle doesn't require any external plugins to enable things like object detection or two-way audio. It comes with instant push notifications out of the box which neither of those options have. StreamShuttle also comes with built-in DDNS service and a VPN configuration utility to enable secure remote access from anywhere on any device. You can checkout https://streamshuttle.com/why-choose-us and https://streamshuttle.com/features to find out more about what sets us apart. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Judman13 · 2023-11-13 19:09 Blueiris has an initial purchase price of 80 usd then 35 a year for continued support and updates. If you prefer not to pay the 35 then you don't get updates, but the software continues to function definitely. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Judman13 · 2023-11-13 19:30 I am on mobile so foegive me if I miss something, but we are looking at 99 to 120 a year for a max of 8 cameras? This is a huge limitation that will immediately turn off most potential users. Do you support scheduling? Main streams and substeams? 24/7 or motion activated recording or both? Ai motion detection? Custom detection models? I see mention of pwa, but also installed apps for notifications are they the same? What about any sort of hardware acceleration for video encoding or motion analysis, gpu, Google coral etc? Direct to disk storage? What happens to my system if I stop paying? Do I keep the ability to use the software without your ddns support or is it totally dead? Can I run your software completely offline? Maybe I don't need your ddns and vpn service because I have rolled my own and don't trust yours. Will blocking all network access break the software? Overall I welcome competition in the consumer vms space, but there is a lot of information lacking here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FlyEspresso · 2023-11-13 19:48 Yeah not sure this makes much sense compared to what’s already out there. People wanting to self host likely have more cameras than the limit—let alone already using other options. Might want to rethink, maybe a yearly support license that’s less? No restrictions on camera count? You can see even use Ring Alarm Pro + Edge storage using ONVIF cameras and stored locally and at least that way you get a lot more functionality/integration/ease of use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rome390 · 2023-11-13 20:19 Hey Judman13, These are all great points, we just recently launched so getting feedback like this really helps! Some of these points are made in the documentation but i will look into making them more prominent in the future. The goal is to not overwhelm people who aren't as "in the know". I do though have to disagree with the idea that 99-120 is too much for 8 cameras considering how many people utilize Ring/Google Nest etc... and happily pay more for those services where 24/7 recording is not even really an option. The current target audience is basic home users which in most cases have 8 or less cameras. However that is not a limitiation of StreamShuttle. We will be adding options for additional machine/devices to be added for a small additional fee to the home plans. StreamShuttle was built differently than most other solutions with multi-hub approach that allows it to easily scale out to a large number of machines and support a large number of devices. Soon we will also be introducing business level plans that will cater to users that need multi-location support with a lot more devices. If you purchase a lifetime license you get 12 months of upgrades / support and can continue using it forever. The main purpose of StreamShuttle is to help get people off of the cloud or at least the "public" cloud. With a lifetime license you can run it completely offline in an air-gapped environment. The DDNS service is not at all a requirement and only there for conveinience. Same with the VPN we actually use WireGuard under the hood and its all locally managed. StreamShuttle supports 24/7 or Activity based recording (object/motion/audio or externally triggered) event recording. It does direct to disk recording by default. However it can also re-encode on the fly if the device is using an odd codec. It also supports both hardware accelerated decode and encoding (currently behind the advanced settings flag). The PWA app can be installed on PCs/phones/tablets and allows a unified experience accross all devices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rome390 · 2023-11-13 20:26 Hey FlyEspresso, Thanks for reading! Ring alarm pro requires a $20/month minimum subscriptions and is still limited to utilizing SD cards for storage on each individual device. What do you think the number of cameras the average selfhoster utilizes? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FlyEspresso · 2023-11-13 20:39 Only requires one SD in the Ring Alarm Pro—not per device. I get it’s more but was an example of something that’s fairly easy and already likely something people are paying for (or another security platform, as you can’t self host emergency response stuff). You’re not going to capture much of a market for 2-4 camera installs. It’d be easier to use an ecosystem you already use/wont have to manage. Probably in realm of 5-15. I just know I wouldn’t consider self- hosting something that’s got a low limit like that—or any limit. Kills off ability to add things on and/or ‘because I self host’ add on additional. After all self hosting is about using my own resources—compute, power, storage, and server—why would I want to be limited by a SaaS licensing/artificial limit/bogus segmentation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rome390 · 2023-11-13 21:18 That's fair, i'm an avid self-hoster myself so I get it. That's why I made sure there was a 1x purchase option so there would be no need for an endless subscription. I'll keep that in mind when we review plans, maybe bumping that limit a bit to give a bit more breathing room for future expansion. I understand most people in this sub are capable of managing more complex systems but the goal is to make it easy for "everyone" even those 2-4 camera installs to get up and running with a system that respects their privacy. Rather than having everything pushed to the cloud. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FlyEspresso · 2023-11-13 21:27 I get that but I think you’re missing what I’m saying. For people that (even if it’s easy and simple to setup) go through the step to host your project on their hardware, they’re already spending costs outside of what you’re now putting on top as an ongoing subscription. This isn’t something someone just installs on any machine, you need something that’s running 24/7. That takes a amortized hardware cost and power—so yeah it may be the easiest self hosted option but that ‘I need something simple market’ likely isn’t used to having a dedicated box to host something. If you’re expecting people to use a windows machine they have already—that too has hurdles with software updates and people using it for family stuff. Your recommendation and requirements don’t even mention windows — just Linux. So again, who has Linux experience but needs something this simple / hand held? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rome390 · 2023-11-13 21:49 I understand what your are saying, StreamShuttle does run well on commodity hardware. I know we can't account for all hardware combos but for people using 4 or fewer cams, most hardware will work. We will eventually have recommended hardware for people who are looking for a more tailored solution. We are still reviewing which hardware we eventually want to offer. Windows is supported as first class citizen and mentioned elsewhere. However was omitted in the system requirements area. This has been updated to make sure it's obvious windows is a supported platform. thanks for that! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FlyEspresso · 2023-11-13 22:33 Again missing the point, I’m saying the ven diagram cross section of people having this hardware sitting around (free) + inability to self host other options is going to be pretty slim. Otherwise people will need to spend and factor in that need to get the hardware to run this. That’s above and beyond your subscription—which competing options don’t have. Not to mention they will likely have the skills to self-host OR get dedicated hardware (like an NVR or something like Ring). (It’s not like your offering is one-click and use an app to set it up—which is what you’re competing against if doing the sub 8 camera ‘ease of use’ segment). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spupuz · 2023-11-14 11:17 is there a docker image? is there a demo to play with? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rome390 · 2023-11-14 13:55 There will be a docker image option available. It's already utilized for local dev so it just needs to be cleaned up a bit before putting out. You can also grab the free trial now from the website. If you are interested in trying out more than 1 device, let me know and we can get you a license to give that whirl. A demo instance is a great idea, ill look into getting something like this setup ASAP. I think it could really help showcase the difference between the existing options. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Square_Home_967 · 2023-12-26 13:13 Why are all you assholes downvoting this guy? His answers are thoughtful and he’s been very receptive.
