question about netmaker reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- urinka · 2023-11-13 14:45 i don't know if this is the rite place to ask but ... if i have a server of netmaker the data flow thru the server and the speed is lemeted by the server speed or the server is acting as a coordinator to connect between the nodes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-13 16:35 The answer is 42. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gioco_chess_al_cess · 2023-11-13 17:37 Both are possible. In an ideal world every connection would be peer to peer with Netmaker exchanging only the keys. In reality any non trivial network might not allow this so easily and you would require a relay. In this latter case the Netmaker server or a dedicated relay node has to route all the data exchanged. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gioco_chess_al_cess · 2023-11-13 17:38 Both are possible. Typical issues are double NAT and symmetrical NAT. That said, the only issue I encountered in my experience is with my workplace network. Netmaker just did not work for that, only an external relay node could make it work (and relays are now a pro feature, so not selfhosted) for this reason I ditched Netmaker for Netbird which uses coturn for a much more reliable NAT traversal. Netmaker is also very good, you can try it first and if you have no issues with the clients you are going to use you are done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- urinka · 2023-11-15 11:27 >Netbird do you think that netbird going to be more easy to use and maintain ? is there any author good options that i can look into ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gioco_chess_al_cess · 2023-11-15 17:22 netbird is not easier, it requires an identity provider which by default is zitadel self-hosted (requiring quite some resources, it cannot run ona basic VPS). In alternative one can use an externally managed identity provider but this requires to follow the documentation for a proper setup. Once it's setup, maintainance should be more or less the same.
