Big disk win, what do you think? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maxgrav · 2023-11-13 06:43 Just picked up 17 x 1-TB HDDs at $8 each on craigslist. All WD, Seagate, and Toshiba. What do we think? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lyothan · 2023-11-13 06:47 Not really a big win. You can get a 10TB used for about $60 on eBay ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-13 07:32 It’s always nice to see when people talk down to other people on this sub just out of spite. Cheer up a little, life’s wonderful, go outside and live a little. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-13 07:33 From a price point of view that was not a good deal in terms of $/TB, but, if you need a lot of throughput you can easily create a 17 disk RAID6 array, but this requires an LFF storage system that can handle these many drives. Do you have such a system already or what was the idea to buy this many 1TB drives? Can you elaborate more? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyber · 2023-11-13 07:37 That's a lot of drives to, er, drive. Lots of power and space to accommodate. Good for redundancy and resilience though. Would you install all or keep some on a shelf as cold spares? You can get far more bytes for your money with larger drives of course, but those wouldn't have the flexibility you have with the 17 drives. How are you intending to use them? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-13 08:27 Sorry to chime in on the negative comments but it's not a good deal. 17x7 Watt = ~120 Watt, that's around what my entire home setup uses, including storage. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maxgrav · 2023-11-13 08:54 I don't plan to run them all simultaneously. I'll have 3 data sets: 1. My main storage 1 TB, with a syncing copy of the whole TB on another machine and 1 offline copy updated perhaps every few months. 2. My family photos and videos, allocating 1 TB to the photographer of the family, with a synced copy attached to a digital photo frame. 3. My home video media server hosted on a cloud storage app I wrote myself. I probably won't put in any redundancy for that set and will focus on size. I haven't learned RAID yet, but will sometime. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maxgrav · 2023-11-13 08:54 Haha ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maxgrav · 2023-11-13 08:56 I don't plan to run them all simultaneously. But I am doing a lot of video stuff which fills up space really quick. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyber · 2023-11-13 09:07 There's people far more experienced than me that will advise you on RAID with striping and parity to balance performance and resilience. I do wonder if it would be worth using some of those drives for backup rather than sync. Preferably, to a remote setup (I use my brother's home to host a small server for this purpose, and offer backup to him). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-13 09:20 You could use them as a backup chain where each month, you backup all your existing data to an empty 1TB drive. You have 17, so you can easily have 12 drives for a year if that’s something you would like to do? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-13 09:22 Come on, on every post you whine about electricity prices in Europe. Note everyone lives in Europe you know? And some people can afford or don’t care about their electricity prices because it could be covered by a flat rate in their rent or what not, have you ever thought about that or do you really need to tell every single soul on reddit every day how expensive electricity is for you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-13 09:23 No one cares about any of your opinions at all, so just keep them to yourself, will you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-13 09:27 You mean like you with your electricity prices? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-13 09:27 troll ---------------------------------------------------------------------- limeice · 2023-11-13 09:28 That was my thought too. Power efficiency is a big factor to consider when hosting any permanently online self hosted solution. It just doesn't add up right when going for smaller hard drives anymore. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- limeice · 2023-11-13 09:30 I am not in Europe. Electricity where I am is 0.090 euros/kWh. And I still care very much about power efficiency. Anyone who doesn't care now when building their first setup will inevitably care sooner than later. It's a valid argument to bring up, not sure why you don't feel that way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-13 09:30 You don’t even know what an online troll is 🤦 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-13 09:31 you are, troll ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-13 09:33 Because that’s for OP to decide and you would have seen that OP will not use 17 drives all at once so there is no energy usage problem. Maybe read OP’s comments next time and not everyone needs to bring up everything otherwise you can start commenting this under every post “electricity, e-waste, CO²”, is that something you want or do? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-13 09:42 I see, your comments are as good as your work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-13 09:43 troll ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Racctical · 2023-11-13 09:51 Sounds like a big win for the seller at face value. What do the crystal disk stats look like for the drives? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DrAndri · 2023-11-13 14:05 Troll ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smegheadkryten · 2023-11-13 17:36 >It’s always nice to see when people talk down to other people on this sub just out of spite. Cheer up a little, life’s wonderful, go outside and live a little. Who is talking down to OP? OP asked for people's opinions, and they said OP paid too much. And what does telling someone they overpaid for something have to do with being cheerful lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fmbret · 2023-11-13 21:03 Just to say, I’m in Europe, I’ve paid an average of €0.04 per kWh for the few months, no doubt it’ll go up shortly but still 😅 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-13 21:07 Sounds great, but according to the official statistics of the EU, Kosovo has the cheapest power with 0.06€ / kwh https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics- explained/index.php?title=Electricity_price_statistics ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fmbret · 2023-11-13 21:08 Yeah well I mean I’m not going to start sending you my electricity bills but I’m not paying what that graph says it should be in my country. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-13 21:11 Good for you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fmbret · 2023-11-13 21:12 Right.. Bit strange but OK ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maxgrav · 2023-11-13 22:00 Makes sense! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maxgrav · 2023-11-13 22:01 Interestingly, my power is free in Hawaii. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maxgrav · 2023-11-13 22:06 That is a great idea. I love the idea of nearly indestructible data.
