New self hoster, docker issues reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KingMerc23 · 2023-11-13 01:17 Hello all! I recently turned my old pc into a small server to help get started on this journey i love watching others on! I have gotten ubuntu on there along with docker desktop, however i do have a few issues id need help with: - how do I point docker to use my external drive (1 tb) instead of drive os is on? (beginner in linux) - how can i setup ubuntu to save my sharing password so i can RDC into it? it currently generates a new PW every startup - docker desktop does not keep me signed in and won’t start on startup even with it enabled i’m wanting to do a small variety of stuff, i.e a dashboard with radarr/sonar for plex. Any help is appreciated! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CactusBoyScout · 2023-11-13 01:49 Don’t use Docker Desktop. Use Portainer if you want a GUI. And you will want to map drives into your Docker containers using Docker Compose. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KingMerc23 · 2023-11-13 01:59 Thanks for the info! I have gotten portainer CE installed, but it's still a bit strange to work with. Any idea how I can have portainer spin up on startup? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CactusBoyScout · 2023-11-13 03:14 I believe it should start automatically at launch? I would seriously just uninstall Docker Desktop now. It’s just not commonly used and you can’t use the Docker command line if you’re using Desktop. So if you remove it you can use Portainer for your GUI but when something gives you a Docker command to install/change something you’ll also have that option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnonymusChief · 2023-11-13 04:49 You would need to mount the external drive to a local folder, for example "/docker", use Docker host volume mounts to ensure that the Docker volumes are saved to the external drive. Also, learn Docker command line. There is so much documentation out there.
