Early Santa: what is missing in selfhosted reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DerCommodoreX · 2023-11-12 22:39 Hi guys! I was wondering: What self hosted software are you missing? What would you which existed? Background: I am a quite Senior Dev and have 6 months between gigs. Would be fun to start a side project to keep my skills sharp. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- illegalsmolcat · 2023-11-12 22:47 You're planning on building something useful in six months? Hahaha. At least you're optimistic about it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DerCommodoreX · 2023-11-12 22:51 It all depends on the scope ;) Focus is key. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GlumKnowledge5933 · 2023-11-12 22:57 More realístic and rich of charateristics budget manager, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-11-12 23:05 I think the most important thing is to scratch your own itch, otherwise you won't maintain it once you get busy again. Another option is to contribute to an existing project, that way you don't have to be the primary maintainer. Things I'd love to see: - Better iOS/PWA Subsonic client. Currently, the best are Amperfy, Subsonic, and play:sub. All are good, none are great. - Better iOS/PWA ereader which supports Komga/Kavita/AudioBookshelf APIs for syncing read status. There's nothing like Tachiyomi. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- illegalsmolcat · 2023-11-12 23:12 Right. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Diligent_Ad_9060 · 2023-11-12 23:13 Some management tooling around [cloud- hypervisor](https://github.com/cloud-hypervisor/cloud-hypervisor) would be cool. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- d4nm3d · 2023-11-12 23:29 Personally, what i am missing from my setup is a real functional web based front end for Rclone (and yeah i know about the built in one.. it just doesn't do what i want). i'd like a web gui that will let me schedule rclone copy / sync tasks and watch the progress I guess a web based good sync but using rcone as the back end.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- waeking · 2023-11-13 00:01 A gift registry for multiple users. I've looked into Portainer and other tools but they're all too big and catered towards container deployment (which I think is dumb, my container deployments are configured with version controlled files). One of Lazydocker's best features is the ability to exec into a container with the press of a button. I'd love to be able to do that via a web UI instead of sshing into my host and then exec'ing into my container. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sottey · 2023-11-13 00:12 Portainer IS super heavy, but also pretty great. I want to have summary by groups and summary by friends. This put user at the center, and obviously make it difficult to have non-authenticated user on the platform (a feature that Splitwise don't have actually) - all options to split money: by share, but amount, by percentage, by adjustment I would be happy to have a good self hosted alternative for that, especially when all my family and friends already get an account on my Keycloak. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DerCommodoreX · 2023-11-13 19:31 Meh ... not really. ... Changing your compose stack configuration on the fly instead of using version controlled files (ie YAML files in a git repo along with some stupidly simple CICD) makes your whole setup fragile. It goes against every best practice you'll see in the industry. It takes 5 mins to setup a Github actions pipeline to run `docker compose up` against your host on every commit. Every change to your stack is audited in the form of git history and undoing a change is as simple reverting a commit. This setup is so much more powerful than on-the-fly container/stack management. With CICD you can introduce secrets to your setup (dump them to environment variables in your pipelines and reference said env vars in your YAML). If you're worried about supply chain exploits in your containers you can schedule pipelines that scan your configuration for vulnerabilities etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daninthetoilet · 2023-11-13 21:49 currently use jellyseer, would rather something built into jellyfin ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Reddit481 · 2023-11-13 21:58 A proper alternative to Quicken that truly supports importing existing Quicken data file and supports manual data entry. The playing was smooth as butter - auto transcoding and streaming based on bandwidth. Really a simple, efficient piece of software. Emby comes closest, but with a lot more overhead and "extraneous" features. Last time I played around with it you'd just bind the API to a domain socket and to do something like "foo create vm" with some sane or pre-defined templates wasn't really user-friendly. I could also see some kind of control plane where you would register hypervisors to make it transparent for the end-user. A control plane could also handle resources, like block storage, networking. Using namespaces a bit like k8s does it could facilitate multi-tenancy as well. I started building something using python and rabbitmq. But it's all a mess at the moment and I can't say I have a clear idea of requirements. I really like how [vm-bhyve](https://github.com/churchers/vm-bhyve) is designed. The key would be the keywords, tags, exif, meta whatever you call it would be universal so the tags entered on my android phone using gallery or pixturesapp would show in the photo ai system so they can be searched upon. i dont mind goign to a web gui for everything and would be better if i could browse via network share or use with syncthing to keep all devices synced to this DAM. 3. But of course it requires knowledge in configuring stuff in shell correctly…. the documentation is quite comprehensive. For other implementations there are good and bad ones; for NUT I never had the need for a GUI but in light of less people reading documentations or having deeper knowledge of how things work in detail would make such a “web-GUI”-configuration tool for many people a good thing to have. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CountZilch · 2023-11-15 08:14 Hey man. I'm not worried about people "stealing" open source project ideas. Go for it! Just I have a lot of half formed ones and it's not too clear what you are looking for. One for example: I use Bring! which is a great - and simple to use - grocery shopping list app. They refused to open the API though so no HA integration. I think creating an open version of that that works with the new HA list integration would be awesome. You can set up automations to say scan empty bottles from the fridge, and alert you when you go near the grocery store. Happy to write a design spec or such and do testing but I'm not much of a coder. I was going to get my kid to make the generic icons, but maybe more like Material theme. Facebook Events is the gold-standard here, where it has almost all of the functions that I as an event host or attendee, but Facebook is obviously the worst. Most of the self-hosted alternatives are very complicated to set up or are focused at academic conferences instead of friends and family. As a person hosting events, I want an easily set-up, selfhosted site/app like Facebook Events, So that I can manage my event without Privacy concerns As a person attending an event, I want an easily accessible site/app like Facebook Events, So that I can have the relevant information Use Case 1 - Hosting a Board Game Night * Invite List with RSVP system * Events Basics (Address with map, Time/Date) * Basic posting mechanism Use Case 2 - A Camping Trip * Meal Planning * Pinning of information (like Campground reservation number) Use Case 3 - A Disney Vacation * Detailed Itinerary There would be very basic profile information with simple password protection. Unique URLs to each event, which would have option of private or public. Ideally would be a simple set-up in Docker without having to connect an external database (like Radarr, etc.).
