HA options reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MyusernameisLostOne · 2023-11-11 19:14 Hello, I have just started working with docker and I am trying to see a good fail over solution for a two Proxmox 'servers' ( desktops with same ram and processors ). My goal is that I would like to have 2 ubuntu 22.04 server OS VMs, one on each proxmox. I understand that Proxmox has HA ability but it seems that you need three servers and I am not sure if this is possible in my situation of two. Being that I also have an OPNsense FW instance running in each server with CARP, is it possible to have something similar on the Ubuntu servers with sync capabilities with the docket containers? Is there a better way, what are the options? I thank you in advance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-11 19:40 Most services can be run as HA by default (any webservice, databases) without the need from HA from the hypervisor. Look into keepalived and reverse proxies like Traefik or Nginx. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-11-12 05:33 Look into docker swarm mode / k8s / k3s. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MyusernameisLostOne · 2023-11-12 23:45 Thank you for the suggestions. As I am quite new to Docker, I hope that I am explaining well and using the correct terminology. I spun up a couple VMs to investigate swarm. Given that that I have 2 hosts, what I cant wrap my head around yet is, does a swarm have a VIP? With my current docker compose setup ( no HA ) I have a SWAG reverse proxy that points to a HA and Vaultwarden. From my FW, I port forward to that server. However, if I were to move my servers to a swarm, is there a VIP address that I point to? From what I read, having a 2 host swarm is not ideal, but from what I read, if the manager were to go down, the worker would continue, but I cant see at this point how I have have the port forward work, unless there is a VIP between the two hosts in the swarm. Am I even close to the proper concept? :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-11-13 00:13 At a certain point, when you get fancy enough with swarms and high availability, you need to use heavy duty tools for the task. The first place I suggest you look at is [Kubernetes Ingress](https://kubernetes.io/docs/concepts/services- networking/ingress/). The idea is that your ingress service integrates with your swarm infrastructure so that it is aware of internal addressing and can perform load balancing / HA natively, without external bodges. If you do want to try something external, look at coredns. I'm pretty sure they have k8s and possibly docker plugins. A third thing you can do is host your reverse proxy within the same swarm, which means it will have hostname mappings for services within the network, which means you don't need to mess around with floating IPs etc.
