this is my planned home Lab and was wondering what apps I should have or improve to make it better. as I want to use it remotely my friend and I that share them together. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scary-Confidence8784 · 2023-11-11 16:20 [Current plan](https://preview.redd.it/n3opgjv2sqzb1.jpg?width=861&for mat=pjpg&auto=webp&s=401e45b74b1106c3b3ceabb9934e51ae41bc9422) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crimewaffle · 2023-11-11 16:57 Nice. But why wireguard AND Tailscale? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-11 17:25 What are you using Prometheus for? And why is it running on the Bittorrent node? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- illegalsmolcat · 2023-11-11 17:26 Double the security. Stonks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scary-Confidence8784 · 2023-11-11 17:37 I am mainly used to tailscale but want to test out wiregaurd. Cause tailscale has a device limit and i feel limited by it sometimes. But overall it is perfect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crimewaffle · 2023-11-11 17:38 Check out headscale: https://github.com/juanfont/headscale ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scary-Confidence8784 · 2023-11-11 17:39 I use it to monitor all the other devices and all the analytics from the rarr suite. It is runnning there cause i was still testing it out if it shouldnt be there where should i put it then? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scary-Confidence8784 · 2023-11-11 17:42 This is really interesting never knew it existed that solves some of my problems. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crimewaffle · 2023-11-11 17:44 I heard about it a few days ago, setup and rollout is super easy. Only downside it the poor documentation on ACLs in my opinion ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crimewaffle · 2023-11-11 17:45 I would put it on node2 with the vpn and networking stuff ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-11 17:46 > Iuse it to monitor all the other devices and all the analytics from the rarr suite. Ah okay, was just asking because nothing like cadvisor or node- exporter is mentioned and Prometheus just by itself does nothing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CrAzYmEtAlHeAd1 · 2023-11-11 17:53 Hey! It’s great to get these things out of your head and written down, and this is a decent place to start. Home lab is all about experimentation and learning, so good job with that. Couple quick thoughts here, looks like you’ve got 4 machines that are all running Proxmox. Are you planning to cluster them? If not, why not? What kind of power do all your machines have? I see the graphics cards that are in the ones labeled with the laptop, but what do the machines have outside of that? I see you answered the Wireguard and Tailscale questions, but just you know Tailscale is an obfuscated Wireguard network and I definitely wouldn’t try to set up a bunch of different VPN stuff especially if you’re new to this. I see the couple Windows VMs for “management” but just curious what those are for, and why you have two? Not bad but just curious if you’ve thought about it. What’s the nginx being used for? Seems a bit weird just chilling there with your pihole and VPNs. Then like u/thekrautboy said, I’m curious what Prometheus is doing chilling with the BitTorrent stuff, and what it’s going to be doing. Otherwise, I like the start! Enjoy your time with it, and feel free to ask any questions you may run in to on your journey! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scary-Confidence8784 · 2023-11-11 17:53 Will move it and test it out in the arrs in an ubuntu server or a docker container. What does grafana do exactly i saw ot being thrown around but never understood it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-11 17:59 Grafana visualizes data, simply put. For example it can grab all the collected metrics from Prometheus and turn them into useful dashboards with graphs and charts etc. Grafana + Prometheus stack is very common. And Prometheus can get its metrics from cadvisor, node-exporter and many more options. Telegraf is also popular. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scary-Confidence8784 · 2023-11-11 17:59 Ok the laptops are old laptops they are to identify and use the graphics cards for transcoding or emulation and i just bought 2 mini pcs to run as nodes. The 2 VMs are for me to monitor the files in the bay and the other is for redundancy and for my friend to access it to manage and audit it with me cause both of us use it. Tailscale is the thing currently running and connecting the system so i can remotely access it for now. I wamt to setup nginx for reverse proxy and have a better management of all services i currently run. Prometheus will be moved with the arrs to see it in full action as i just discovered how to use it properly. I want to cluster them so they can kind of run in high availabilty mode and share resources when needed to lessen the load on all devices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scary-Confidence8784 · 2023-11-11 18:01 That would be perfect for the second rendition of the setup to have proper analytics instead of data dumps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-11 18:03 Just as a example: https://github.com/stefanprodan/dockprom ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scary-Confidence8784 · 2023-11-11 18:05 This has proper graphs and numeric calculations this is perfect for over all analytics and overwatch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-11 18:10 Quick examples of Grafana dashboards [displaying metrics of a Docker host (cadvisor)](https://imgur.com/lU0sz8Q), [displaying metrics of a host \(node- exporter\)](https://imgur.com/LWq0Pfi), and [displaying metrics of a Proxmox host](https://imgur.com/mYcdLwG). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-11 18:33 Keep in mind that you need to run the controlserver (headscale) on a outside node (like a rented VPS) to provide access without opening ports of your home network. If you use Tailscale "directly" then they provide that for you and you dont need to open anything to use it, but that server is under their control and its closed source.
