laptop choice for home server. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sugardaddy_satan · 2023-11-11 09:05 i want to build a home server based on laptop. ideally it should have dual slots for sdd. which one do you use ornrecommend? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-11 09:44 Why? Homelab labtops tend to die heat death because of the constant 24/7 use they are not designed for. They are also more expensive. Any reason to pick a laptop? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anejey · 2023-11-11 09:47 Using a laptop for a server is only reasonable when you already have an otherwise useless laptop around. You'll be much better off buying some mini PC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tnt1232007 · 2023-11-11 10:07 I think what you want is a mobile server If that's the case, I suggest a PC and a van ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sugardaddy_satan · 2023-11-11 11:46 one thing i.forgot to.mention. i wont buy a new laptop. jus maybe a used one and a not so expensive one. i just want. to.serve files. no media streaming etc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grobouletdu33 · 2023-11-11 11:48 I won't buy a laptop for homelab or even intensive use, but, if your use case NEED it to be a laptop: i would suggest going for older gaming or worksration 17/18.4" (second to 4th gen socketed Intel i) with Optimus and mxm (mxm enable you to remove a potentially useless gpu that can be switched for a mxm to nvme adapter) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grobouletdu33 · 2023-11-11 12:00 why do you need it to be mobile ? (if you need to) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Oopsitsdeleted_ · 2023-11-11 12:05 For me it was in a dumpster and it had a Nvidia GPU that was compatible with Jellyfin lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kon_dev · 2023-11-11 12:11 Exactly, I have repurposed a ThinkPad T460 as proxmox host. It has a more powerful CPU than my Synology NAS and is mainly for testing out things in VMs. It also runs Jenkins, Uptime Kuma and pihole. All important data is backed up to my NAS, so if the t460 dies, I can restore quite easily, either via Proxmox or restic (backup with both tools in parallel). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-11 12:12 That sure is a good reason! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfhosted-ModTeam · 2023-11-11 19:26 This post is being removed due to the subject not being related to the "selfhosted" theme of the community.
