Reverse Proxy Help reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zanduh · 2023-11-11 05:35 On Ubuntu I have a few containers like Audiobookshelf that I want to reverse proxy to with subdomains. I own a domain through CheapNames. I have NPM in a container. My IP is dynamic. My understanding is that I should use Cloudflare free DNS to hide my IP from pings and manage the subdomains. I then need to somehow link this to something like DuckDNS to link to my dynamic IP. This should then send traffic to my IP on forwarded ports 80 and 443 and be picked up by NGINX Proxy Manager in Docker to handle. When I look at guides they have parts of this but not the whole picture at once and I don’t see how I can use my domain and subdomains with DuckDNS. Any help is appreciated! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jerwong · 2023-11-11 05:50 Don't bother with CloudFlare unless your ISP is using CGNAT. It just adds extra unnecessary overhead. I just have my individual subdomains CNAME'd over to my DDNS name. From my router, I port forward TCP/80 and TCP/443 to NGINX. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-11 06:54 Tons of guides about this exist already, why write another one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zanduh · 2023-11-11 06:58 Totally understand that it must be frustrating to see the same beginner questions pop up a lot. I did try to learn this all myself and am really just hitting a wall with how the dynamic IP plays into it If you have a link to a guide that encompasses I’d greatly appreciate the link. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-11 07:05 > My understanding is that I should use Cloudflare free DNS to hide my IP from pings and manage the subdomains. If this is something you want then forego all the dyndns shenanghans and just have a srach for how to use Cloudflared Tunnels (`cloudflared`). With that tool in use, your network connects 'out' to Cloudflare and they use that link to pass traffic to you so there's no need for anyone anywhere to be updated with your changing DNS. It’s all a bunch of compose.yml copy/paste ninjas that then come to this sub and need help because copy/paste did not work for them. No guide will ever solve the problem not wanting to understand the underlying subject or matter better, because if they did, they wouldn’t need a detailed guide but just search themselves how an IPv4 connection works. Have an upvote from me because everyone downvotes you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nintenuendo_ · 2023-11-11 08:45 So I'm basically doing exactly what you're talking about : - Host website at home (Hide Ipv4/Ipv6 details from whois or visitors via cloudflare) - Deploy all services including the nginx web server in docker containers (managed with a docker-compose yaml) - Subdomain all services securely on main domain - Automate SSL retrieval and renewal My sites over at https://nintenuendo.tv and I'm pretty sure this is exactly what you're asking about. If you'd like me to run you through exact details send me a pm and we can chat! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-11 14:53 > You have to understand that todays people need a guide for everything in exact detail to their exact problem, if it deviates the slightest they say “they hit a wall” because they are unable to think and extrapolate what the missing information is they are not provided for free. I mean, we did that 20 years ago with dynDNS where no one had a static IP, and we were Teens with no google, no reddit, no forums. Oh sure, youre absolutely correct and i am aware of "how people work" today xD Doesnt mean i have to be happy about it and just accept it quietly haha. > Have an upvote from me because everyone downvotes you. Is it so obvious that the only reason i am active in this sub are the massive amounts of karma i am whoring? ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YeNerdLifeChoseMe · 2023-11-12 02:12 Same, and keep the TTL on the CNAME low.
