LibreElec-like base for RDP reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- d662 · 2023-11-11 01:01 I recently ran across Kodi on LibreElec, which brands itself as "just enough OS to run Kodi". It's super fast and does what it says. I was wondering if there was a similar project that was "just enough to run RDP" that could be used on low-end devices that are just used for remoting into more powerful desktops. Has anyone run across such a project? (I know there are a few thin client solutions out there, but they all seem to require WAY too much configuration for my use case). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iamofnohelp · 2023-11-11 01:14 Guacamole on whatever you want. I run a Guac dock and works for me to RDP into my desktop. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- d662 · 2023-11-11 01:21 I think Guac is great - I use it for Chromebooks to RDP. But to use it I need a base OS, desktop environment and a browser. I was thinking something lighter than that with an RDP client for sub-1G ram hardware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-11 06:29 Once you're moving into wanting a 'base os, desktop environment, a browser' you're longer in the *'just enough os to run '* camp. An OS which can support a desktop enviroment and browser is just an normal OS really. I guess the upshot is you want a lightweight OS - Lubunutu, Absolute Linux etc. Prob just a Google search away, but maybe try over on /r/linuxquestions etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- certuna · 2023-11-11 06:46 ChromeOS is more or less that - just enough OS to run Chrome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- terramot · 2023-11-11 08:52 You're looking for a thinclient OS, something like thinstation ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tech2but1 · 2023-11-11 13:59 I think you are overcomplicating what a thin client is or can be. A thin client is pretty much exactly what you're after, just enough OS to run RDP. Not sure what configuration you're finding complicated, I use some Wyse terminals that can be configured manually with little to no effort or only slightly more complicated is configuring them using text files over FTP. Whatever hardware you have run "just enough OS" on it, Alpine Linux or DietPi for instance. You really are making this more difficult than it needs to be for some reason. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lunakoa · 2023-11-11 23:43 I pxe boot into mint then run what I need to be it a browser, rdp client, x2go, ssh, or some utilities like clonezilla, gparted, or iscsitarget to mount and read the hdd from my windows box (think bitlocker and changing the SAM) If I need something even lighter, like under 128gb of RAM I go Tiny Core. You can set it up with a thin GUI and rdp client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 6stringt3ch · 2023-11-12 00:23 Might be overkill but check out [porteus kiosk](https://porteus- kiosk.org/).
