Extreme simple selfhosted media server for kids reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Idenwen · 2023-11-10 20:49 I'm looking for an extremely simple media library GUI that is controlled just by up/down/left/right (navigating in a grid of menu preview / album images), a play/pause and a stop/back-to-menu button and nothing more to keep it as simple as possible There is something like that somewhere? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-10 21:02 My four-year-old can use plex just fine and turn on Paw Patrol the film by himself, so….? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Idenwen · 2023-11-10 21:05 Wife kind of denies full pc setup for the kid. So i found an old lcd and thought of making an arcade style box for it with arcade controls and selling it as a video station that can be shut off remotely. But need a GUI for that that interfaces with the media library at home. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -SHINSTER007 · 2023-11-10 21:08 Set up an instance of kodi for them that only points to kids content isolated from the rest of your media. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-10 21:13 PC? Tizen OS is for Samsung TV. If you have an LCD you can connect a Firestick or anything else that runs Plex via HDMI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-10 21:15 > Wife kind of denies full pc setup for the kid. full pc setup? What? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Idenwen · 2023-11-10 21:16 No TV in house, only media sources are mobile phones or PC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-10 21:19 Then use the Plex desktop app on a PC. Lock it down with parental controls. Or use a phone with Plex app and do the same. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-10 21:19 Get a cheap Android Tablet with Plex then. They cost like 120$ or a Firestick, or an older AppleTV, or or or. Why do you have to make stuff complicated that doesn’t need to be complicated? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-10 21:20 If youre looking for a extremely basic "dumbed down" web interface with only a few buttons to start playback of episodes, that probably doesnt exist exactly how you want to use it. But you could easily create your own interface with OliveTin for example. Add buttons, link the buttons to trigger something on your Jellyfin or Plex server, done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UnfairerThree2 · 2023-11-10 21:29 Wife approval factor might be met with Kodi. By default it’s got a fair bit to it, but if you’re willing to find a decent skin and lock it down to only the media you want, sounds like a decent solution. I still think Plex might be an easier option to manage though, have you considered Plex HTPC? It basically only needs up/down/left/right joystick-like movement (apart from volume), and it works on Linux too, which might be a fun project to get going for this arcade-type way of watching. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-10 21:31 No TV in house? Any reasons for that if i may ask? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-10 21:35 No electricity. > No electricity in house? Actually no house. > No house for electricity for TV? Hmm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-10 21:37 Normally i always understand what you mean. But... i dont get this one. Prolly a joke?! Fuck covid man, probably covids fault ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-10 21:40 No joke in house? Get well! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-10 21:40 No joke in house! Thanks buddy ❤️ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-11-10 22:21 My current setup is Chromecast with GoogleTV. The trick is to uninstall all the apps, then install Jellyfin/Plex, then create a kids profile, and disable profile switching without PIN. That way you have your home screen with the apps you want to use, and then your kid won't be able to wander onto anything else. I couldn't find a way to remove the recommendations after the app row, but if there's no app installed it will cause no harm. Worse case scenario your kid will ask to provide those recommendations somehow else :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ParticularCod6 · 2023-11-10 23:09 Don't forget content restrictions, which I am not sure if it can be done on kodi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- russpacito · 2023-11-11 01:16 JellyFin with a user account signed in for kids. All they can do is watch the kids tv or kids movies that we allow. Make sure to throw in some Bluey! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fehmitn · 2023-11-11 13:39 when i used plex in tizen he was alwayys bitchin about comptability it just annoying that every time i have to order plex to convert the movie to the format that please the samsung tv , i have switched to emby it was less annoying about movie format ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-11 14:13 We have 264 and 265 content that is all direct play on all our Samsung TV's. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- persiusone · 2023-11-11 18:28 Jellyfin is like using Netflix, pretty simple
