Dell wyse 5070 and Z220 zc3 xeon reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fishamatician · 2023-11-10 19:29 Hi folks, I wanted to get a home server set up instead of all the services we pay for, I ordered a dell wyse 5070 but then realised the limited storage options. I need a nas or something for storage and have been offered a z220 zc3 xeon for £40 with no drives. I went to a local computer recycling centre and they have loads of old hardware for very cheap prices, it's mainly older office equipment and there is no list of inventory so it's hard to know what to ask for vs what they might have. I'm wondering if I should take the z220 as starter server and use the 5070 as a pfsense box? Or use the 5070 as a server and the z220 as a nas with wake on lan to save power. I originally planned on just using ubuntu server but a week on here and I'm thinking proxmox with an arr stack, jellyfin, audiobookshelf, calibre Web, and a dashboard. I have a pi running pihole so far with no-ip dynamic dns for a static ip. There is so much to get my head around, Ive spent this week learning basic docker and linux pathing and permissions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fluffer_Wuffer · 2023-11-10 23:25 For hardware, your better off asking in r/homeserver or r/homelab .. Out of curiosity, how did you find the computer recycling center, and are they open to the public for sales? I've gotten jealous of folks in the US seemingly having lots of places like that, I've never been able to find places in the UK (I used to use one in Southampton for recycling old business kit that had gone past its shelf-life.. but they only sold on eBay). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- certuna · 2023-11-11 00:16 Those old Xeon workstations are dirt cheap for a reason, they consume power like crazy so what you save on purchase price you’ll pay in running costs. Noisy too. The Wyse 5070 is annoyingly limited to SATA M.2 SSDs which are very hard to find in large sizes (and expensive) - you can try to find the HP t540 or t640, these are thin clients too but they take NVMe SSDs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fishamatician · 2023-11-11 08:15 I just googled computer recycling and one poped up, it's in Carisbrooke on the isle of wight. It's a small one man band, I called but had terrible signal so just drove over to see what he had. Its called digital recycle, Newport isle of wight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfhosted-ModTeam · 2023-11-11 19:38 This post is being removed due to the subject not being related to the "selfhosted" theme of the community.
