Unable to transcode on Jellyfin: renderD128 missing. Where can it be? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-10 17:43 I have a media server based on Ubuntu server 22.03LTS with Kernel updated to the latest stable 6.5.7 running on Proxmox 8 as a VM. My machine is a Beelink EQ12 with an intel N100. Im using Jellyfin server 10.8. My obstacle is that I cannot activate the transcoding on Jellyfin because I cannot see the renderD128 in /dev/dri. I thought It was because my processor is quite new so I needed the latest kernel but.. after installing the latest kernel and rebooting... I still don't see the renderD128. It's frustrating. I don't know what else to do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-10 17:47 So, open a terminal and check if the device is there on your system? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-10 17:49 Something like this? ls -la /dev/dri/renderD128 ls: cannot access '/dev/dri/renderD128': No such file or directory ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-10 17:49 > It's frustrating. I don't know what else to do. Follow the excellent Jellyfin documentation for hardware-transcoding. The `/dev/dri` doesnt magically appear when you run Jellyfin inside a VM. You should also ask /r/Proxmox if you need help to passthrough your device to the VM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ziomal12 · 2023-11-10 17:56 ls -la /dev/dri ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-10 18:04 >ls -la /dev/dri ls -la /dev/dri total 0 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 80 nov 10 17:09 . drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 4100 nov 10 17:09 .. drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 60 nov 10 17:09 by-path crw-rw---- 1 root video 226, 0 nov 10 17:09 card0 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tenekev · 2023-11-10 18:13 The others gave you a solution but note the following: Jellyfin in a VM means that once you passthrough the GPU to the VM, you will lose graphical capabilities on the host. That could be a dealbreaker. Segmenting the GPU is inefficient. I host my Jellyfin in a LXC because I can passthrough the GPU without reserving it to the LXC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-10 18:24 Thats correct. And if OP would bother to look at the Proxmox documentation for this, or at least ask /r/Proxmox, then they would learn about this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-10 20:07 ok this is a lead! I guess it has something to do that I'm using proxmox. Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-10 20:10 Right! I'm starting to understand what I should do here. Thank you so much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-10 20:15 Ok I can consider this as case closed. I cannot see the renderD128 because im using jellyfin in a VM in Proxmox and It doesn't have full access to the machine resources. Thanks to everybody that helped me to see the problem and pointed me in the good direction. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thetman0 · 2023-11-10 20:22 I created an LXC for Jellyfin on proxmox and shared my intel iGPU to it. Then shared the passed through device to Jellyfin running in docker. Works great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-10 20:40 >Thats correct. And if OP would bother to look at the Proxmox documentation for this, or at least ask > >r/Proxmox > >, then they would learn about this. Hey.. Really.. I did look at the documentation in Jellyfin I thought It was there where I would find the answer... Obviously the solutions in their guide were not valid for my setup because of Proxmox. My level of knowledge was not high enough to understand how proxmox would interact with the VMs. That made me ask for help in this forum and as you see Im not looking for a step by step guide or so.. I just needed someone with more experience to point me in the right direction and as soon as you did with a very simple and short comment was enough for me to understand that I was looking for answers in the wrong places. It would have taken me ages to find it out by myself and thanks to the help of this awesome community (that includes you) I could find out what was causing the problem and Im ready to read guides and investigate by myself again. Anyway... Next time I will write a 10 lines post to ask a question dedicating most of it to explain my research history to prove that I'm not a lazy guy and Im really confused and in need of some simple and basic orientation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-10 20:55 Nice! This helps a lot. I’ll try to do it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-10 21:03 > That made me ask for help in this forum Why not /r/Promox? If you struggle to learn Proxmox, why not ask in the most obvious place? And they also have a forum https://forum.proxmox.com/ > Anyway... Next time I will write a 10 lines post to ask a question dedicating most of it to explain my research history to prove that I'm not a lazy guy and Im really confused and in need of some simple and basic orientation. I doubt it, and being condescending like that just makes it more unlikely that anyway would want to spend their own free time to assist you. Good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-10 21:10 As I stated I had no idea that I had a proxmox problem. I thought it had something to do with the kernel. I was looking for solutions in wrong places until you guys pointed me in the right direction. Sorry if Ive been condescending but you must a admit that you have used your imagination to build a wrong image of my research process. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-10 21:12 You stated from the start in your OP that you are using Proxmox. Its not anyone elses fault that you didnt think of connecting the dots and considering even remotely that it might be Proxmox related. You are using software A and software B. You chose not to post in a sub about A or B, instead in a sub that is about a completely different purpose. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-10 21:44 You are using your imagination again to explain reality because for you it makes total sense. Your level of knowledge is higher so it looks ridiculous to ask things like this. Well I was trying the Jellyfin forum and it was closed. Read only mode. I was not using proxmox forum because I had no idea it was a proxmox problem even if it doesn’t fit in your mind that I honestly had no clue about it. I had to look for help and this forum name is self-hosted… I mean.. is there anything more generic and generalist than that name?? I totally thought I was in the right forum to ask something like this without being accused of being someone lazy and interfering in forums to bother people. I really don’t get why you stick to this Sheldon Cooper attitude. It bet you are super intelligent but it’s so difficult for you to understand this and get on the shoes of regular mortals. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-10 21:48 Why do you keep wasting your time here? The fact is if you had posted in the correct place in the beginning (even ignoring doing own research before hand), you would have gotten to the root of the problem much quicker. Good luck in the future, you will need it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-10 21:53 Why do you keep assuming that I knew what was the right forum to post? The fact is that I had no clue I had a proxmox problem and a forum named Del-hosted sounds way more generalist than a forum specialized on proxmox. Thank you so much Sheldon good look understanding daily human behaviors. You will need it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-10 21:57 > Why do you keep assuming that I knew what was the right forum to post? The fact is that I had no clue I had a proxmox problem and a forum named Del-hosted sounds way more generalist than a forum specialized on proxmox. I was only talking about Jellyfin right now, which you said "their forum is closed" and i explained that to you. Yet you completely ignore all of that and go back to Proxmox. Neat. > Thank you so much Sheldon good look understanding daily human behaviors. You will need it. Big Bang Theory insults are a little outdated by now... but i will do you another favor and i will act as if you really hurt me by that. Ouch! And now youre blocked :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IllegalD · 2023-11-11 07:50 Don't take it personally, there is a small pool of users on this sub that feel the need to constantly make new users feel a little uneasy asking questions, it needs to stop. They forget that once upon a time, they didn't always know the precise route to get certain types of help, and it drives people away. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- terramot · 2023-11-11 09:15 I believe you can setup the GPU without passthrough with virtGL in the display hardware or something similar... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement-Jumpy · 2023-11-11 12:17 Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into it right now!
