Raspberry Pi 5 router reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bogdan2011 · 2023-11-10 05:23 I have used the Raspberry Pi 4B as an openwrt router and I'm thinking of doing the same in a project. The Pi 5 is available but the 4B is still cheaper. Which would you recommend getting? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bityard · 2023-11-10 05:48 If you find yourself needing more CPU horsepower, try the 5. If you don't, stick with the 4. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This-Gene1183 · 2023-11-10 06:24 Agreed. The 4 works fine. I much more prefer the NanoPi series but I see people like the RPi for OpenWRT ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ffimnsr · 2023-11-10 08:04 Buy a Banana PI R3 or NanoPi as the RPi does not have enough lan ports, almost same spec ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sunneyjim · 2023-11-10 08:53 Pi 5 does have hardware crypto if you wanted to run a vpn server on it as well ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tschloss · 2023-11-10 11:43 Do you use it with a single network port or do you add interfaces, via USB? Wasn’t there a performance limitation at least on the USB ports? Maybe the 5 has better specs here? Did you look into GL.inet routers? The have OpenWRT under the hood? At their web shop cheaper than at Amazon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bogdan2011 · 2023-11-11 18:33 I used a USB ethernet interface but I didn't notice poor performance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tschloss · 2023-11-11 19:39 No I think a slow disk like an USB memory stick was a theory. The speedtest you ran with the same adapter I guess? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bogdan2011 · 2023-11-11 21:29 I'll do some tests and report back if interested. I ordered a pi 4 and have the same adapters. So far with the pi I achieved speeds that were significantly better than those of off the shelf wireless routers in the same price range. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bogdan2011 · 2023-11-12 19:02 Just to confirm that on a gigabit connection I get around 800Mbits on a usb3 adapter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vizzy_vuzzy · 2023-11-18 11:00 Rpi5 also has a pcie which may lead to better routing/switching performance and bandwidth ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vizzy_vuzzy · 2023-11-18 11:03 I mean if you use a pcie card for additional ports. Or even go 2.5gbe. If that’s what you want. While generally you can use usb Ethernet for full internet speeds, you may be risking some latency, if we are talking about realtime tasks like online gaming.
