Is hosting on my blockchain considered "selfhosting"? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NewOCLibraryReddit · 2023-11-10 02:55 I created a tool to host data for individuals on a blockchain. Is this considered "self hosting"? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- malperciogoc · 2023-11-10 03:15 If you also host the blockchain I don’t see why not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- excelite_x · 2023-11-10 03:17 Personally no, but then again… I wouldn’t care about a definition thing at all anyway 🤷‍♂️ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Itsthejoker · 2023-11-10 03:22 People are still doing blockchain bullshit? I thought that had finally died. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NewOCLibraryReddit · 2023-11-10 03:25 [Still alive and well](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/wgZNoNBnr0g) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- moarmagic · 2023-11-10 03:43 I'm going to say probably not, but depends on your use case. Putting data on a blockchain is closer to a p2p system. You release it out in the wild and then have little direct control on it. For me, the primary driver of self hosting is taking ownership and control of my data and systems, where here you still primarily rely on other people's systems. The systems you have Interacting with that data ? Maybe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 100GHz · 2023-11-10 03:49 It's a bit ambiguous question: A) If you are hosting the blockchain "at home", then by definition you contribute to the consensus of the network and you are just hosting the blockchain. Self hosting becomes irrelevant as your node becomes part of the never ending non reputation party. B) If you are are enabling people to host data ON the chain itself: Well, good luck on future technical interviews if you put that on your resume :P ---------------------------------------------------------------------- techma2019 · 2023-11-10 03:53 Like Filecoin? Or is everyone connecting to your one server…? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ThatDopamine · 2023-11-10 03:55 Self hosting is a state of mind maaaaaannnnn ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nightbefore2 · 2023-11-10 04:18 https://youtu.be/YQ_xWvX1n9g?si=YFaM-jjSWlHUjSNa Please watch this ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NewOCLibraryReddit · 2023-11-10 04:26 2 hours?? tldw? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nightbefore2 · 2023-11-10 04:31 Just put it on - trust me. It’s as long as it needs to be to explain all the context. The only tldr I can give is NFTs and blockchain technologies in general suck. If you want more details watch the video ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Genubath · 2023-11-10 08:36 I think I've you can set up your own local $ETH chain for the purposes of testing out and developing smart contacts. Otherwise, a chain with a single source of concensus (your server) kind of defeats the purpose of using a block chain to begin with ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cludeo · 2023-11-10 08:38 Can’t tell if sending this vid as a reply is satire or not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bitspace · 2023-11-10 09:32 No. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CEDoromal · 2023-11-10 10:27 Only watched a few minutes of the video since I don't have the time to watch it entirely. I will watch it later or tomorrow when I'm fully awake so I could absorb it better. But as someone who has studied blockchain in college and developed generic decentralized apps and ERC20 tokens, here are my current oversimplified thoughts: I can agree with the NFT sentiment. Although for me, it's more of how it was used that sucked. From the way I see it, NFTs acts more like a receipt of the product rather than the product itself. However, businesses and opportunists advertised and sold them as if they *are* the products. Blockchain technology, however, isn't really that bad. People often mix up blockchain and cryptocurrencies despite the fact that there is a wide difference between the two. Blockchain can be though of as just another approach to database, the kind that is decentralized and more-or-less immutable. Cryptocurrencies on the other hand are just there to give an incentive for people to participate in processing transactions on the blockchain. Where most scams and rugpulls occur is with tokens. The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and ERC20 makes it sooo easy to create your own tokens. You could just create a token, advertise it as if it's the next Messiah, then rugpull all those who bites. ^(Quick definition of terms: EVM is like a decentralized cloud computing platform. Smart Contracts like ERC20 are codes that you could upload to the blockchain (database\) and run using EVM after paying with the blockchain's native token.) **Cryptocurrencies as of now are definitely not a replacement for traditional currencies - the same way how blockchains are not a replacement for databases. However, there's nothing wrong with implementing new methods to do things. Even the first steam engine was invented looong before the industrial revolution, it was just not exploited as much back then because they already have plenty of slaves to do work.** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FierceDeity_ · 2023-11-10 10:52 Technically has little to do with the blockchain itself, because yes it's hosted there but if you remove all the stonks it's just a piece of technology that can probably be used for some things. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FierceDeity_ · 2023-11-10 11:04 Did you know you can just not run smart contracts if you have the next block to make? The entire prospect of using this for anything important is actually based on trust, even though we believed it isnt. I am an IT professional and I honestly dont see many uses for the tech. So many things have been tried, and like all of them failed. Hell, IBM and other big companies tried and then pulled back out because it doesnt have that much use outside muh money. You kind of have to face it, you likely studied a dead end technology. That happens, but at least you gained a lot of cryptographic and database knowledge, the likes of how to safely store data, how to make sure writes are secure, the ACID principle and how these guarantees are made possible technically... I mean, at least I hope you did. It would have been mighty useless education otherwise ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CEDoromal · 2023-11-10 11:34 No worries on whether I could make use of it or not. I like studying things and I had fun studying blockchains. Besides, it was just offered to us as an elective in college, so it's not really that big of a deal. I also already know that it doesn't have much use. I think most people on r/CryptoCurrency would even agree with me that cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology are solving problems that don't exist, barely exist, or would probably only exist in the future. Holders that trust in the tech believe that mass adoption will come - but again, it's all speculative. For me personally, it's just a good-to-know kind of thing. This is also why I think it's not necessarily "bad" - it's just not as good as some people say it is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FierceDeity_ · 2023-11-10 11:42 My college never started to offer it, good one in hindsight. But we do have deep learning courses nowadays. Like three of them.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NewOCLibraryReddit · 2023-11-10 13:16 I agree that NFT's suck. [Take a look at this 1 min video](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/jdjWXdCv3DI) The better way ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NewOCLibraryReddit · 2023-11-10 13:18 why? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bitspace · 2023-11-10 14:36 Is every node on the blockchain under your control? If so, either you have a huge network or you have a useless blockchain. If not, then it's not self-hosted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NewOCLibraryReddit · 2023-11-10 15:32 If I am the only one who knows where my data is, and the only one who can decrypt the data, I'll consider that self hosted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cdemi · 2023-11-10 17:45 So if I host my data on Google Drive and encrypt it and tell no one, that's selfhosting? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tripanafenix · 2023-11-10 18:22 Why bother asking if you know it better? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NewOCLibraryReddit · 2023-11-10 19:12 > This subreddit focuses on the software that is considered to be self-hosted, regardless of where it is being hosted.
