Puter Self-Hosted, The free Web Desktop, is Coming! reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-09 08:56 Is this kinda like a webtop or KASM thing? What's the USP? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mitousa · 2023-11-09 08:58 Thank you very much for the comment :) This is a webtop with storage in the cloud. With the self-hosted version you can use it as a "Cloud OS" or remote desktop. You will be able to pick and choose what storage backend to use (server's hard disk, S3, Azure,...). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-09 08:59 Cool, I'll give it a go when it's up and I get a bit of time. Good luck with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mitousa · 2023-11-09 09:01 Thank you, please let me know if you have any questions :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BaggySack · 2023-11-09 09:15 Clearly a lot of work already done. Super responsive on iPad. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mitousa · 2023-11-09 09:21 Thank you very much! I can't wait to release the self-hosted version and see users adopt it based on their needs :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- touwtje · 2023-11-09 10:15 Looks cool, when? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mitousa · 2023-11-09 10:19 Thank you! Aiming for January. I'd be surprised if it's not available by then. The first version is probably going to be a little technical, meaning you'll have to work with Docker but we'll make it much easier over time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mikhatanu · 2023-11-09 11:19 What os does it use? Or is it web based? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mitousa · 2023-11-09 11:21 It's web-based. Currently hosted on Linux but the self-hosted version should work on all mainstream OS's ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iroQuai · 2023-11-09 11:27 Sounds great! Is it possible to combine multiple (cloud) storages in one webtop? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mitousa · 2023-11-09 11:29 Yes! That's on our roadmap for sure :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iroQuai · 2023-11-09 11:34 This is something I didn't know I was looking for, but now I can't wait!! :) will you post a release here or can I get a notification somewhere else? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rvansoest · 2023-11-09 12:14 it feels incredible. Does the definitive version have a browser? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mitousa · 2023-11-09 12:15 Thank you! It might, but really can't promise as it's significant amount of work to add a browser. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- proxracker · 2023-11-09 13:20 Looks pretty! If you need a alpha tester, contact me. Would try it on proxmox... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-11-09 13:46 Docker is easy as long as you have a compose file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-11-09 13:47 Some small things i am missing in the software is touch scrolling on the app menue over the apps and a good complete webbrowser. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Initial-Repeat9146 · 2023-11-09 14:02 This is really responsive, do you have a github link so we can try to self-host this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dev-N-Danger · 2023-11-09 14:55 Curious. It says I was added to the waitlist however I didn’t add any information. Also if you’re looking for tester I’m interested ---------------------------------------------------------------------- highedutechsup · 2023-11-09 15:02 Can I install Steam on it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nestramutat- · 2023-11-09 15:32 As someone running their homelab on kubernetes, fucking thank you for S3 storage <3 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neumaticc · 2023-11-09 15:34 get off my 'puter ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MeYaj1111 · 2023-11-09 15:35 How did I just sign up for the waitlist without logging in to anything and without giving my email? I just clicked 1 button and it said I'll be notified lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-09 16:23 Thank you for your share! For future reference, we ask that you create a text post with the link to the blog in the body of the text, and a few sentences on why it's relevant to the community. We look forward to future content. Cheers, /r/selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thepenis_mightier · 2023-11-09 16:37 Like others, I clicked the button to join the waitlist but was never asked for an email or anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FierceDeity_ · 2023-11-09 16:46 More importantly, when do these hosted html desktops develop a common standard on how to implement the apps? There's so many now, and none have a common standard on stuff like data access for example. They also all bringt their own small set of mini applications that aren't very useful. At least Code has a file system backend implemented for it - but it seems like it's a file system provider specifically implemented for it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FierceDeity_ · 2023-11-09 16:47 If not impossible because many sites don't allow being framed. So you have to have some browser renderer, which then is gonna use a lot of power on the server. I feel like the concept is kind of doomed here from the get go ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MonkAndCanatella · 2023-11-09 17:35 That's a gorgeous design! Absolutely beautiful work! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- v3d · 2023-11-09 17:41 Looks cool, but one thing is weird... I want to get notified but via email but I never got the chance to input the email and it just says it will update me via notification (which I never allowed in the browser). How so? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fresh_Feesh · 2023-11-09 17:44 Can it run Doom? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sacrome · 2023-11-09 18:14 Looking very cool and it’s super responsive! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sowhatidoit · 2023-11-09 18:57 Pardon my ignorance, would this be comparable to something like Guacamole? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- murlakatamenka · 2023-11-09 19:28 > More importantly, when do these hosted html desktops develop a common standard on how to implement the apps? Isn't wasm such thing? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- idreamofjeanshorts · 2023-11-09 19:28 Aosp? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yokoshima_hitotsu · 2023-11-09 20:07 It seems neat but I have to ask why? What is the use case scenario of this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CatsAreGods · 2023-11-09 20:19 Me too! Either it's sentient and already spying on us or someone forgot an important step :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CatsAreGods · 2023-11-09 20:20 Nothing quite tastes like guacamole! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- liveyourdreamsmax · 2023-11-09 20:45 IT KNOWS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FierceDeity_ · 2023-11-09 21:59 WASM is just a compilation target, it doesn't define APIs between binaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DistantRefaktor · 2023-11-09 22:24 What is this for exactly? I see a bunch of low end web apps and even worse phone games. Am I missing something? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- h07d0q · 2023-11-09 22:31 Yes! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- discoshanktank · 2023-11-09 22:41 I could see this being handy to do personal stuff from a work computer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cybasura · 2023-11-09 23:31 Fancy But is it open source? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sowhatidoit · 2023-11-10 02:09 I think that might be it. Almost like accessing a machine via a browser. Reminds of me Guacamole but I'm still not sure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- festro33 · 2023-11-10 02:13 Looks interesting is there an explanation as to what it is?, from what I can see from the title and link it looks like a web-based OS, is there any documentation to look at? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FabsudNalteb · 2023-11-10 02:33 No. People wasting their valuable time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flossraptor · 2023-11-10 03:19 It's notepad with extra steps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- samsquanch2000 · 2023-11-10 03:46 just stand up your own Kasm server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- myFartFingers · 2023-11-10 04:12 I have exactly zero use for this, but I'm way excited to try it out.
