Unique Raspberry Pi Projects (Compared to Other Hardware)? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RB5Network · 2023-11-09 07:49 Hey all, figured I’d ask here. I was looking for things to do with a Raspberry Pi, that was fairly specific to the Pi itself. Most examples are software and projects that can be done or hosted on pretty much any other hardware. Ironically, I couldn’t find anything that would make sense to run on a Pi or use it as a tool with existing infrastructure. i already run a Kubernetes cluster, have a NAS, etc. and am not limited on hardware whatsoever. But intrigued by any cool things that may be unique to the Pi itself or if anyone else prefers to use it for some specific use case. What do you all think? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- audero · 2023-11-09 08:45 What kind of projects would you be interested in? Pis are toys to teach electronics and programming to kids. You’ll want something that makes use of the electronics hardware unique to the Pi (GPIO pins, I2C, SPI, etc.) Otherwise they’re great for a project that requires a low powered computer you need to fit in a small space. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-09 08:54 Pi as image grabber / processor for diy amiblight is pretty much something pi-specific, as are any projects which use headers like the camera header (showmewebcam) or the gpio pins (lots of automation projects). I'd imagine sites like hackaday have pi tags you can use to look for projects. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bityard · 2023-11-09 13:33 https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/ has a pretty consistent stream of projects and articles specific to the pi. There are also (at least) two magazines that showcase projects and things to do with the Pi ecosystem: MagPi and HackSpace. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RB5Network · 2023-11-09 16:00 “Pi’s are toys” you’ve just awakened a corner of the internet from the depths of hell. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- audero · 2023-11-10 01:16 To be fair, I started my self-hosting journey (among others) with a Pi, but it quickly outgrew my needs. So I opted for a thin client as my "server". Right tool for the right job. I still use and love my Pis, but they are used for some low-level electronics in my home automation setup (which communicate via WiFi to my server). All my Pis make use of the GPIO pins in some way, so I think I'm getting good use out of them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msic · 2023-11-10 02:34 Why ask selfhosted? It is exactly where you will not get Pi specific suggestions, but rather arm64 suggestions. Just as you said, you want to stay fairly specific to the Pi itself. So, look up some Pi specific projects. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RB5Network · 2023-11-10 23:53 No I feel ya. I use MicroPC’s for a Kubernetes cluster. Pi’s are terrible when it comes to I/O. The Pi 5 seems to be making some cool steps though!
