HELP taking over existing self hosted sites & email reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brilliant-War5417 · 2023-11-08 22:29 I’m hoping to take over managing a self hosted site and email set up created by a family member who suddenly passed. I have a very basic understanding of how it was set up, but don’t have the same technical experience to take it on without help. I’ve been searching online and thru forums for answers, but any help that can be offered in the meantime would be greatly appreciated. The most pressing concern is the SSL certificates, which expire soon. I know they’re done with LetsEncrypt and I have access to the Webmin console (port 10000). My family member had some issues with certbot automatically renewing, so he would manually update the certificates. I found the SSL settings in Webmin, but want to make sure I’m going about it the right way if I attempt to renew myself. Some details that might be helpful: - He had a complex setup where domainA.us was the main host of emails for all other domains (there are several). - The main admin login for the Webmin console for domainA shows each separate domain as a virtual server. One of my active domains has a warning that the SSL has been expired since 2021, however the site definitely has a current SSL cert that can be seen when visiting the site. Could this domain somehow be using the same cert as domainA? if so, do I have to do an extra step when renewing SSL to keep everything working? If renewing certs this way isn’t feasible on my own, is there a good service I could use that’s compatible with self hosted sites? Or would I have to migrate everything to a hosting service? Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to offer some help :) Would love to be able to keep the existing set up alive.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- persiusone · 2023-11-09 01:48 Need a lot more info here to offer a solution. Do you have any diagrams, software specifications and versions, etc? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brilliant-War5417 · 2023-11-09 05:08 thx for your reply. Here’s some system details, but lmk if there’s anything else specifically that would help: Operating system Ubuntu Linux 18.04.5 BIND version 9.11 Postfix version 3.1.0 Apache version 2.4.29 PHP versions 5.5.9, 7.0.33, 7.2.24 Webalizer version 2.23-08 Logrotate version 3.11.0 MySQL version 5.7.33-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 ProFTPD version 1.35 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- persiusone · 2023-11-09 05:25 Are the DNS records for email and web externally resolving to the server IP address (or via proxy or port forwarding on a firewall)? I'd start from the outside and work in. Based on the note that the server is showing an expired certificate but the site inspection is not/valid, I wonder if it is being proxied elsewhere, like on a firewall or service like cloudflare. You need to compare them to know the origin. Once determined, it should be trivial to renew or update the certificates based on those results.
