Home robots, any good cloud-free versions? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skynet_watches_me_p · 2023-11-08 22:12 I have 2 Enabot Ebo SE robots. Earlier this year, they fucked up something in the app / how the bot communicates with the phone app. Before this regression, the bot and the phone app would attempt a direct-ip video/control channel. This worked great as video and control worked over wireguard, and no video ever went out to the internet or any C&C servers. Now, nothing works, as direct-IP fails to establish, and the two bots are useless unless your phone is on the same subnet as the bots. This was a selling point, about "remote monitoring" which no longer works. Are there any low-cost robots I can drive around over VPN to monitor a rempte space like a vacation cabin? Has anyone had any experience with this https://www.moorebot.com/products/moorebot-scout ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-08 22:29 If they work in the same subnet why not use VPN with them? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skynet_watches_me_p · 2023-11-08 22:49 The point of the robot was to use while away from home. I am not a fan of installing cameras in a home. I park these robots in a closet, and when away from home, use them to verify sensors in homeassistant. If a under-sink sensor registers as "moist", then I would like to drive the robot over to confirm if water is present. I will not be installing webcams in bathrooms for this purpose. The Ebo bots worked great for this until the maker decided to change how the app worked, and I no longer have remote control of the robots as they fail to connect over a layer 3 boundary. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-08 23:19 Well........ To be honest you got me thinking about buying one. The Moving Cam when a sensor is alerting is actually pretty amazing. You could try to use wireshark to see how they really communicate together and maybe find a solution for that (relaying udp broadcasts etc) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skynet_watches_me_p · 2023-11-08 23:35 When i first bought the EBO robots, the wireshark confirmed that they attempted to use local IPs before going out to the internet. Meaning if you had a wireguard vpn, then all control and video never left your network. There were a few setup packets, but that was it. Now, the apps are completely broken. Wireguard shows the EBO doing one or two SYN packets to the phone VPN ip as well as the app trying to access the robot wifi IP, but it never establishes 2 way comms like before. It falls back to some video relay server in the cloud that can't keep a stable signal to save its life. Hence, the Moorebot and the code being on github, looks promising. There is only one thread about getting alerts in homeassistant from the moorebot, but its not very detailed. for #200 i might try it, as the local / root accounts and opensource stack might be way better than a single closed binary blobn on the EBOs I cracked the root password for the EBO after capturing and decompiling a OTA update. it was 8 characters and I posted it on a twitter account about the same time someone else did a 3 part reversing of the EBO hardware and software and protocol stack. They did not release the code needed to emulate a local C&C server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-08 23:41 Well, iam out. Would be at the same point as you are now. Pretty rare that someone actually checks EVERYTHING before opening a thread. And if you try the Moorebot, could you please post either an update here or DM me? Pretty interesting. At first i thought u wanted to save money on cams for intruder detection. But scanning the house while having reports from smart home Sensors is actually a perfect usecase for it. Again => Sorry man, didnt think far enought. U were right and i was dead wrong on cameras beeing better in ur Situation. Have a nice evening man ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-09 16:24 ## Post Removed Hey, skynet_watches_me_p!
