FAI seed script reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BarServer · 2023-11-07 22:48 Hi, I started playing around with FAI today as I was a little bit annoyed by the Proxmox VM-Templates (you need to change the hostname manually, etc.). And as I wanted to have a look into FAI anyway for $job-reasons... I didn't setup my own FAI servers yet, I just used the online API/service they provide: https://fai-project.org/FAIme/ Of course then I needed a script which is executed after the installation to do all the stuff I need (debconf, config files, etc.). And while I was at it I found a solution to automatically generate static IPv4 network configuration and set the hostname accordingly. Thought someone might find this useful. And if you have any additions or ideas: I would love to read your feedback. What is the difference? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BarServer · 2023-11-08 10:35 Yeah, turns out I did ran into this problem as it seems: https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/setting-host-name-via-cloud- init.45525/ Anyway.. ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BarServer · 2023-11-08 12:10 FAI is a complete solution with PXE/TFTP servers so you can install your clients automatically when they boot via PXE. Apart from that it's basically the same as far as I understand it currently. FAI also generates a preseed file/passes arguments to debconf. However, with the classes and profiles you can write in FAI you can make it more flexible. But I'm not that much into FAI yet. For my homelab some preseed files which can be retrieved via HTTP(S) should also be enough. It's just that I want to build some FAI knowledge.
