Moved home and now Cloudflare times out reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tattooth · 2023-11-07 09:54 Hi there, this is my first post so please bare with me! I'm fairly new to the whole nginx proxy and cloudflare thing but I had a basic set up to access things like nextcloud etc remotely at my old house. I've just moved and tried to match my network set up to how I had it before, static ip, updated dns settings in cloudflare etc but I still get the 522 error when trying to access nextcloud through my domain. I've tried googling to no avail, most places say updating the dns settings to the new ip is all I really need to do, so is there anything else I could be missing? Thanks very much ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cshaiku · 2023-11-07 10:00 Not trying to be an ass, just genuinely curious. What is your use case for CloudFlare if you're running a home server? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tattooth · 2023-11-07 10:05 Its mostly just for remote nextcloud access ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cshaiku · 2023-11-07 10:12 Gotcha. So basically a reverse secure proxy for you to get to your home server. Fair enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tattooth · 2023-11-07 10:21 Yeah nothing fancy, just following dbtech videos for specifically accessing nextcloud remotely. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cshaiku · 2023-11-07 10:29 Why not just setup and use a reverse dns daemon? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EriksonEnterprises · 2023-11-07 10:58 Can you access your IP directly? Cloudflare is just a "layer" as I always say lol If you can't access your IP directly then something is going on with your firewall of your router, or your port/firewall on your server. More likely the router if you moved the server physically to a different location... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tattooth · 2023-11-07 11:28 I did have a feeling it was port related also, I was kicking myself for not screenshotting my forwarded ports from my previous router before the move. I've forwarded the ports for openmediavault and nextcloud now but when i go to my 'cloud.' domain for nextcloud it just takes me to the OMV dashboard ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EriksonEnterprises · 2023-11-07 11:36 Well port 80 and 443 are the ports that need to be used in order for it to be on the web :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnApexBread · 2023-11-07 11:39 It's a WAF + Reverse Proxy + obfuscator +MFA solution. Cloudflare automatically blocks a ton of bots and low levels attacks. Tunnels gives you a reverse proxy that means you don't have to make firewall rules. (I frequently get annoyed when people act like an open port is dangerous, but at the same time I recognize that if you're not comfortable with it then there's a high likelihood of mistake). The reverse proxy obfuscates my true source IP which can cut down on DDoS/DoS attacks. Cloudflare Access provide a quick and free solution to secure public web applications. Yes I know it's possible to do all of this stuff internally but by using Cloudflare I can offload the risk to someone with more people and skills to handle ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tattooth · 2023-11-07 11:53 Thanks for being patient with me. So now I've got it working so "publicip:8888" works for nextcloud access but I do have nginx for proxy hosts but when I put in '[cloud.domainname.xyz](https://cloud.domainname.xyz)' I get timed out by cloudflare, Any ideas? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EriksonEnterprises · 2023-11-07 12:09 Hmmm okay sounds like maybe nginx is the culprit now, potentially You would need to check the server{} blocks within the nginx config and make sure it's setup right. If you're running Linux, you may want to consider uninstalling nginx and installing the ea-nginx that does reverse proxy almost on its own ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tattooth · 2023-11-07 12:21 Amazing, thank you so much, I'll try all these now. I was tinkering with DNS only on cloudflare before as I remember it being part of the set up process so hopefully that'll help now I have the ports forwarded
