DNS names and SRV records (Minecraft Servers) reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tr4shM0nk3y · 2023-11-06 20:03 Hey there, so my problem looks as follows: I am running 2 Minecraft servers in VMs and want both of them to be accessible through different subdomains - internal routing works just fine, and I can access the one server with its assigned subdomain, but the second server won't work without the added port at the end. I've done some research but haven't quite understood what the issue is... My DNS records look like follows: A mc.(redacted).net at (server IP) A modded.(redacted).net at (server IP) SRV \_minecraft.\_tcp.(redacted).net at 0 100 25565 mc.(redacted).net. SRV \_minecraft.\_tcp.(redacted).net at 0 100 25564 modded.(redacted).net. I don't understand why the modded url still leads me to the backend of the mc one, only if I add the changed port it connects to the correct one - can anyone point out to me where my error is? Thank you in advance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sleshwave · 2023-11-06 20:08 If I'm reading the DNS records right, it looks like your Minecraft modded server is listening on port 25564 instead of the default 25565? Could it be that the Minecraft client app ignores any DNS SRV records and just tries connecting to the given domain on port 25565 and will just time out/error in the case of the modded server? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-06 20:09 /r/Admincraft ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tr4shM0nk3y · 2023-11-06 20:12 That's the thing, internally I route the traffic from the host port 25564 to the VMs port 25565, which works just fine - all that is broken seems to be the SRV record? I don't understand why it defaults to 25565 even though the service record points to a different port.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sleshwave · 2023-11-06 20:52 Glad that it's working, had no idea that it needed the full subdomain in order for it to work, learned something new as well :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-06 21:50 SRV are always FQDN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joost00719 · 2023-11-06 22:43 I noticed very weird behavior when using srv records for minecraft. First hour I can't connect, after that I can connect sometimes, and after many more hours it reliably connects. My guess is to just wait overnight and check it in the morning. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-07 00:07 Might be that some terrible DNS providers are involved in that case and it takes much longer to propagate the records with them. With typical decent quality providers it shouldnt take longer than 15 minutes to have the records available, quite often less then 5 minutes. Check with `dig` or similar tools which provider gives back the correct info and track down the issue. Might be worth switching to a better DNS provider for the domain. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joost00719 · 2023-11-07 08:30 I'm using cloud flare. I only noticed it with srv records, any other records are near instant
