Self-Hosted VOIP based around wifi calling reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brave_Movie77 · 2023-11-06 18:49 Hey yall! I am trying to make a VOIP service for myself and I was looking to see if anyone had heard of any of this before! TLDR - I want to be able to take a bunch of sim cards, and use them to forward phones and SMS's to my actual phone. This would enable me to easily split my phone numbers up to multiple services without relying on third party hosts like [jmp.chat](https://jmp.chat) or [voip.ms](https://voip.ms). Another key tenant is that I want to avoid doing the calls and SMS's themselves over cellular - instead, wanting to rely on wifi-calling (VoWifi) - The point of the sim card would basically be to just authenticate with the service provider. The total amount of sims this would hopefully support is up to around 30 max. During my research, I came across essentially 3 options: 1. I am able to plug a USB modem / smart card reader into a desktop / hub and an application on my computer will handle the connection to the service provider, then forward over some protocol (Sip / XMPP / Proprietary) to a softphone on my phone. 2. I am able to plug a phone directly into my desktop / hub and an application on my computer will handle the connection to the service provider, then forward over some protocol (Sip / XMPP / Proprietary) to a softphone on my phone. (Pure Voip offers this for $1600 minimum pricing :/) 3. I have a phone that uses an app to act as essentially a GSM gateway and forward calls back and forth over over some protocol (Sip / XMPP / Proprietary) to a central server, that then forwards it to my phone. 4. I am able to take a phone and connect it over Bluetooth to my desktop / hub, and a sip server will connect to it and then my softphone using chan\_mobile. For 1 - I have yet to locate a device / software combo that will allow me to use Wi-Fi-calling. All operate over 4g/5g For 2 - I have yet to locate an affordable version of this :/ For 3 - I have yet to locate an app that can offer this. This would be the most ideal as then its basically all self contained and cheapest (buy used phone motherboards). For 4 - I would want to avoid chan\_mobile as that would require me to have both a phone per sim card and a Bluetooth adapter per sim card. chan\_mobile is per device, and so it would increase costs to do so. I'm wondering if anyone had heard of anything that could help me, or if you have any ideas! Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- singpolyma · 2023-11-06 19:10 This almost certainly violates the ToS of your SIM card provider, but of course YMMV so maybe you've found one more amenable to SIM farming. Usually these services are done by contracting instead with a carrier willing to provide interconnect over the internet directly (for example, Bandwidth.com ) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DarkKnyt · 2023-11-07 02:08 Just looked at this again, thinking that jd attempt 3CX.... Nope! I think this is a neat endeavour and no advice other than good luck. I'd imagine that getting a sip trunk and then having numbers assigned is cheaper than connecting 30 SIM cards. For me, I'm just hooking up a cell phone to a Panasonic handset system and then whoever wants it to ring in the house can call forward. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jqnorman · 2023-11-07 06:17 in what world do you need 30 phone numbers unless you're running a business... and if you're running a business why wouldn't you just forward the phones to 1 phone to manage...
