Any FTP/SFTP client with web ui? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nanoosx · 2023-11-06 17:58 good day, as per title, I need an FTP/SFTP app with web ui so I can manage and download stuff to my PC and see the progress on the go. currently, have to remote desktop into my PC but it's a bit annoying ;-;. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-11-06 18:14 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mpopgun · 2023-11-06 18:36 Have you looked at sftpgo? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-06 18:49 WinSCP, rsync with progress switch and any other app that supports SFTP. PS: Do not use FTP. Its 2023 for crying out loud. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nanoosx · 2023-11-06 19:03 is this a server or client? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nanoosx · 2023-11-06 19:04 >PS: Do not use FTP. Its 2023 for crying out loud. lol why tho? is it a security reason or what? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-06 19:05 Yes, the very obvious not encrypted part of it. Don't even get me started about how FTP operates with ports. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spicybenis · 2023-11-06 19:12 I would like to hear your grievance with FTP and its operation of ports. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-06 19:30 Why not simply look at it? https://sftpgo.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- drakkan1000 · 2023-11-06 19:43 SFTPGo can use another SFTP server as storage backend, so from the SFTPGo WebUI you can download file from other SFTP servers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-06 20:05 Thanks for all the effort you put into your project :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-11-06 20:26 Use sftp ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spicybenis · 2023-11-06 20:29 Not helpful. I have and continue to use SFTP. Dude made a point to say ports for FTP suck. I'm curious why. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blackops12345678910 · 2023-11-06 20:44 It uses 2 ports. One for the control Channel and for the data channel (which is usually a range of ports). Besides the need to open multiple ports, there is the additional issue of firewalls dropping the control connection when there is NAT involved since no data is passing through it. Although ftp performs better over the WAN compared to sftp. I wouldn’t reccomend it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bucksnort2 · 2023-11-06 21:10 Yeah, all data transported across FTP is unencrypted. If we were both on public wifi and I was running a packet sniffer (like Wireshark), and I see FTP data on the network, I can get a copy of the files you’re up/downloading. I can also see all the commands that you are using and the response back. Don’t use FTP. SFTP solves that issue by using SSH to transfer the files, using a secure tunnel that I can’t sniff. I’ll see the encrypted data, but can’t decrypt it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-06 21:22 SFTP != FTP ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-06 21:24 I've seen (but not used) websync to give a webui for rsync, but not seen anything for winscp. Not sure op could use that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spicybenis · 2023-11-06 21:34 Great input. Do you want to talk about ports and FTP now? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-06 21:38 No. Just letting you know you can continue to use **sftp** even with the info others have given you regarding the poor security and design of **ftp** because its a completely different tech, despite having a similar name. Personally I don't give a fuck what you use. Your data and your risk appetite, I'm not your dad lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spicybenis · 2023-11-06 21:47 Bizarre way to respond to a specific question to a specific person about software ports. But I mean I guess I get it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-06 21:52 Not really - you were moaning that people were schooling you on the fact ftp is shit but also chimed in with: > Not helpful. I have and continue to use SFTP. So i replied to that exact different km statement of yours as succinctly as possible that sftp isn't ftp. So you can use that sftp fine and take the info on ftp being shit on advice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- uhhhhhhnothankyou · 2023-11-06 21:54 VERY helpful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spicybenis · 2023-11-06 21:59 You may want to reread the comment chain. I wanted to know why, specifically, the guy had issues with the ports for FTP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-06 22:08 I don't always agree with the other poster but he is a long-term, very experienced it profesional managing large complicated environments in his day-to-day gig who absolutely knows his shit and has demonstrated his mastery around this sub and other more professional ones time and time again. If he is good enough to give you his reasoning I'd take it. Or just do a Google around the issue - the problems around ftp aren't exactly secret and I'm sure you're bright enough to not need it spoon fed to you other than you seemingly wanting to win internet arguments with strangers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spicybenis · 2023-11-06 22:12 Holy shit bro You know how this website is used to exchange ideas and interactions? Maybe even interact with someone and get their input on why specifically, of all the issues with FTP, they chose to call out it's port usage? Don't tell people to Google it when they're specifically soliciting input, on a social website, from someone who publicly posted something. What a brain dead take. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-06 22:19 I'm not the dude who made the port comment, he can answer that if he likes or you can Google it. I replied to you to let you know sftp isn't ftp and am now being asked to address other matters - just Google the port issues if you don't get replies off the other poster, I'm not your it tutor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spicybenis · 2023-11-06 22:21 We all appreciated your irrelevant drive by comments. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-06 22:23 No worries. Hope you find a decent soln. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-11-06 23:08 Fuck off. Your post has nothing to do with the topic of this sub and you are just a pissy little troll. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Aheadcover · 2023-11-07 00:53 check sysax [windows sftp server](https://www.sysax.com/server/?rfrr=jn7jvzm4), it enables client side file transfer with supported web browser without the need for third party sftp client software ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ryaqkup · 2023-11-07 04:13 I have no Idea why everyone is freaking out, I was curious to hear the exact thing as well, considering this person brought it up. I've literally never used ftp since I've always had sftp as an option, so weird nuances with ftp are interesting to me. If you hadn't asked, I would have. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spicybenis · 2023-11-07 04:52 Was simply curious about what that dude ran into that made him want to specify the ports lol. Guess we'll never know and my attempts to find out were just trolling. Oh well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ruuddie · 2023-11-07 06:52 Perhaps you can also take a look at Pingvin share? It's basically a selfhosted Dropbox. Makes it even more useful, since it can be used both ways (from your pc to your NAS and from NAS to PC) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blackops12345678910 · 2023-11-07 07:11 Do you just need to download? No uploading? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nanoosx · 2023-11-07 07:14 yeah, just downloading ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blackops12345678910 · 2023-11-07 07:16 Where you are gonna download it from? Your mobile data or from work? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nanoosx · 2023-11-07 07:55 I will download files from my seedbox to my PC, and want to control what my PC downloads from my phone while I'm at work ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nanoosx · 2023-11-07 09:57 aight I tried it, don't think it's what I'm for, either that or Idk how to use it. I logged to the web admin , configured things and made an account then logged to the web client, after pressing download, it attempted to download to my phone, and what I wanted is for my PC to start downloading. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nanoosx · 2023-11-07 12:01 ayy, tried it, not my use case. I guess my only option is to download folezilla in docker, it has a web UI, and hopefully it'll download things to my PC and not my phone ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nanoosx · 2023-11-07 12:03 ayy, tried it, not my use case. I guess my only option is to download folezilla in docker, it has a web UI, and hopefully it'll download things to my PC and not my phone ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcadianarcadian · 2023-11-08 12:04 I would use not GUI clients but CLI clients for that But if you really want to see what your client downloaded or start/stop the process, use Webtop and install FileZilla on the Webtop. As a docker image, run webtop as you want, then install FileZilla in a docker container. Then you can use "docker commit " command to create your own webtop+filezilla image. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-09 16:52 ## Post Removed hey, Aheadcover!
